Folic acid deficiency

Hi, 5 weeks ago I was diagnosed with having a folic acid deficiency. I’m a 46 yo women. Was perfectly healthy up until 3-4 years ago. I used to do high impact excercise like metafit spin and circuits. Often doing all 3 classes back to back. This is just to give you an idea of what I used to be like. So....first time at doc, said it was fibromyalgia. Second time at doc year later said it was menapause. Each time I got put on meds accordingly. My gut instinct was that it was neither. Third time at doc(6 weeks ago) I fell out with him. Was not usual doc. Told him I knew there was something wrong with me. He ordered full bloods and here we are. My issue is this. As soon as I took prescribed folic acid I was back to my old self. Was sooooooo happy. Joined gym again. Was sleeping brilliant. Full of energy. 5 weeks on I’m back to feeling awful. It’s like the folic acid tabs are not working anymore. I’m back at docs in a weeks time. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this.

Soz long story I know.

Hi dexydoo, and welcome to the forum.

Sorry, I haven't experienced what you've described and don't have any answers for you, but others here may have experienced similar. x

Hi ya, before i was diagnosed i had low folate was prescribe folic acid, to be honest only helped a little, few weeks later still felt bad had more blood tests then they said vit d levels too low. Maybe worth getting another blood test.

I went thru similar a couple of years ago, I was dieting at the time and was told I was to try to eat lots of bean sprouts, white cabbage ,spinach,, as these contain high content of iron folic acid. Your bloods should be checked regular by practice nurse to ensure they have given you the correct dosage and that your levels have gone to normal BUT that doesnt mean stop there.

Yep I'm on Folic Acid and Iron meds as well. Must be something to do with the Fibro. Got another blood test next week to see if I have enough of both now. Been on folic acid for two months so far and iron for a year.

Hi Dexydoo, my husband has folic acid deficiency and now is on folic acid. He has several medical conditions so I haven’t really noticed any difference. He may have felt a little more energy. He has cellulitis and just got out the hospital. He is feeling better now...,well he is still on IV antibiotics for the next 9days at home. I personally haven’t had folic acid deficiency. I'm sorry I wasn’t of better help but I hope you and your doctors are able to sort things out. 😊💕🦋🌸🌿
