Hi Patches12

Boy can I relate. Leg pain and spasms keep me up-all night. GPs won't even consider muscle relaxing or serious pain relief medications such as Tramadol of Diazepam because they are worried about the people becoming addicted and they get the blame. If you go on the main page of the UK Fybro web site and look for the Fybro Medical Pack it has some great information about educating your GP and others about treatments.

Best of luck

i am on tramadol for pain,

tramadol is recommended for treatment of Fibro in the EULAR treatment plan guidelines

Specific recommendations on pharmacologic management are as follows:

Tramadol is recommended for management of pain. Although other treatment options may include simple analgesics (eg, paracetamol) and other weak opioids, corticosteroids and strong opioids are not recommended.

you can read the full guidelines on the FMA UK website

I take nortriptyline at night & take slow release tramadol during the day, I find one tramadol with one paracetamol is better than 2 tramadol, I also find the slow release better than the standard. GP was quite happy to prescribe if it helps.

Tramadol can be addictive, but I've never had a problem with it. I take a few days off every couple of months. Usually perfectly fine, but sometimes a few withdrawal symptoms. Not nice, but not terrible. When they're just physical symptoms, it means that your body has grown dependent on them. That's not too big a deal. If you start needing them *emotionally*, that's addiction, and you should stop taking them.

Oh, I also take paracetamol and ibuprofen sometimes, depending on how my tummy is feeling (long-term use of naproxen wrecked it), diazepam for bad back spasms and sometimes for anxiety, Oramorph for the times when tramadol isn't enough (I avoid it unless I really need it - I do start getting addicted to that very quickly, for some reason), gabapentin, and Venlafaxine. Are you on any anti-depressants? Some of them (mostly amitryptaline and Duloxetine (I think), but also Venlafaxine) can really help with pain.

I've been on tramadol for years. The pain clinic prescribed it, originally, and my GP was happy to continue.

I took tramadol for a year and had to stop it due to no longer being effective. Back on useless codeine. Agony in walking or moving but gallbladder being checked.

Hi Patches

I'm sorry you are in so much pain. You sound as I was last year. Luckily at the moment my pain is not so bad. How long have you been on Gabapentin? It took about 3months for me to notice a difference and I was on 900mg for a good few months, I am back down to 300mg now. My knees and hands are the worst. It got so bad that I couldn't cope. My doctor did offer me tramadol but I've tried it once when I had my appendix out and it sent me loopy, didn't know where I was. I was totally out of it just from 1 tablet. Not sure what dosage it was but my goodness, never again! My Rheumi prescribed me with capsaicin cream for my knees, it is fantastic, but as it contains chilli, make sure you wash hands a lot after applying :). See if your doctor will prescribe it for you, it may work :). I find I am not so sore after a magnesium salt bath, it's a shame it doesn't help you. I also drink pint of water with quarter spoon turmaric in it, I think that may be helping me too. After a year of being in so much pain. I have managed to get back to work and most days now pain is manageable. I hope you find something that works for you soon. Oh, I also take Sertraline, 50mg in morning and 100mg at night to help me sleep and cope with stress throughout the day. I have started to sleep better too, I get about 4-5hours now which is great still fatigued some days but love the fact I can move around again, thought I would never get there, not brilliant but i'l take this over what I was like. I still keep watching and expecting and dreading another major flare up, don't think that feeling will ever stop. Very best wishes to you, hope you find something that eases your pain really soon. :) carol
