Hi. A potential career change has presented itself but it would involve a fair amount of manual handling. Would this be safe to do with a sliding hiatus hernia? I don't have time to see a doc to ask for advice before the interview. Thanks.

Lifting with a sliding hiatus hernia
I don't know, if I were you I would just go for the interview and make an appointment with the GP, you can always not accept if they offer you the job.
A manual job might be full on if you suffer with Fibro.
Hope it works out for you
Hi I have had a sliding hiatus hernia for donkeys years. I have found food/eating control helped ie; avoiding large amounts especially before work, and no big meals or eating at least 3 hours before bedtime, having nibbles for during the day keeps the gut working without over exerting it , exercise which you will get at work - work must have equipment for heavy lifting. Also have water to drink keeps guts calm from any attack ....
But do speak to GP....find out at interview weights of items to be lifted and ask about assistance equipment.you should mention it on any health question, but that is only so an employer knows what extra help they can give you .
Good luck
Hugs to all
I managed a nursing career with a 6cm hiatus hernia but I dont think it was termed "sliding" I would ask your gp about this it would be terrible to start a new job , like it and then have to move again.. Are you taking pills like losec/lansoprozole/omeprazole to help with this.?
Thanks for the replies. It's interesting that you managed a nursing career as the job would be an ambulance care assistant. Yes on 20mg omeprazole daily
Sounds terrific I have started to watch "Inside the Ambulance" on tv I guess it might be a lot of lifting-moving and handling and some patients could be quite heavy-I dont think a hiatus hernia is a serious as an other type of hernia, since its in the gullett i think you could cope, if you are still unsure ask your gp..
