Amoxicillin allergy

Was given Amoxicillin for a chest infection today and have had this antibiotic on a number of occasions with no ill affect . After taking the first one I developed a very sudden allergic reaction ,full blown, tongue swelling and rashes . I am over the worst now but was wondering if anybody else has suffered from a similar problem .

Yes, I'm allergic to this.

Just avoid it and ask for other antibiotics if necessary.

Don't think it's anything to do with fibromyalgia.

Personally I haven't but my dad when he was alive was given it the same thing happened to him, he also shook uncontrollably we all got a shock as he had been given this every year for bronchitis as long as I can remember and had been ok. The same thing happened when he was given penicillin, so that was two things he was never allowed to have anymore. Apparently you can become allergic to drugs but it's frightening to see, there wasn't lot of explanation given at the time it was just a case of they gave him something in place of.

The strangest thing was, whatever it was they replaced it with made him better quicker and the following year he wasn't bad once, he died a couple of years later anyway but with only odd infection not lasting very long at all. Xx

I think you should go to A&E with this, you can get reaction to anything even if you haven't before xx

It does sound like a penicillin allergy hun what strength are the amox? I can cope with 250ml but anything stronger I get a rash I itch and feel unwell.

500 in capsule form , I have had it plenty of times before but this time it must of been one to many

Yes hun so have I- not sure if you know that pills are NOT 100% product there is a measured amount of amox the rest is additives, that goes in most drugs (except those given via I.V in hospital from an infusion) SOME of the additives dont suit us all therefore if its NOT a penicillin allergy its one of the additives- I found this out several times-had to change omeprazole, tramadol, even paracets and ask my pharmacist to get other brands for me.

People with fibro often find themselves sensitive to medication however this sounds more like a full allergic reaction which is unlikely to be linked to your fibro . Hope you feel better soon xxx

I think fibro does something to our immune systems ( I keep reading papers that conflict whether fibro is autoimmune or not!)

I've had odd reactions to things in the past but in recent years I've reacted to chocolate (2 chocolate buttons had me shaking, dizzy, started a headache) plus spices, coffee, pineapple, ginger all have the same effect.

Ate chocolate, ginger, curries for years with no ill effects, now I'm so cautious what I eat.

Any reaction that involves breathing problems and/or swelling in mouth, nose needs a visit to A&E.

Hope you're ok now.
