I haven't heard of this treatment for fibromyalgia and unless it was proved to be a cure I personally wouldn't consider such an aggressive approach x

Thanks for the very interesting post.

Every study helps them get closer to the truth and possibly a cure.

👍😊

Hi harpo just read your post. Interesting. We need to keep looking at ways to improve our lives. Can I ask did the treatment help with your depression and anxiety?

Take care

Hi, I had been a juror at the high court, it was about 3 young kids / babies that had basically been physically abused then murdered. The case lasted 8 weeks. I was alright during the case, I mean health-wise. Weeks after it I started to get very depressed and anxious. I was eventually admitted to a mental health hospital. They tried all different types of drugs and talking therapies. I stopped eating and drinking. They gave me E.C.T as a last resort. I had six treatments, one every week for 6 weeks. It pulled me back from death basically. I am now on meds for life now for depression and anxiety. The E.C.T did not cause any long term problems like memory loss etc. Everyone reacts to treatments differently.

Hope that answers your question, if you need to know anymore that's not a problem.

Thanks, Alan x

I hadn't thought of how being a member of the jury in a case like that would affect a person. But I can see how it would cause problems. It takes a certain type of person to remain detached from such abuse, or as detached as possible. I doubt that was part of the jury selection process.

I'm glad you are able to talk about it now. x 🐸

Hi Alan

Thank you for sharing that with me. Sorry you had to go through all of that. How dreadfull. My gran had it done years ago but I'd recently heard they were still doing it. I have bipolar disorder. Really hope I haven't upset you and thanx again. Take care

Even if it was a cure I wouldn't put myself through ECT. When I did my nursing training it was the only thing that made me want to pass out. It is still a contraversial treatment for depression, I doubt they would get away with trying it on Fibromites. Or I seriously hope they wouldn't.

I am so sorry that you had to undergo ECT. It must have been a dreadful part of your past and must have taken a lot of courage to tell us about it xx

I have a couple of friends who work in a psychiatric hospital and I will ask them if you like?

I know a woman who gets it every 2 months. Its the only treatment that works for her depression and anxiety. X

I don't think ECT is still a valid treatment for mental illness in Britain.

Just to let you and angiesmith50 know that I have asked a friend of mine who is a nurse in a psychiatric hospital about ECT and it is still used as treatment in recurring depression.

Just to clear up any doubts 🐸

I too would air caution trying this= electro convulsive therapy? the middle word scares me. we have already been persuaded to try using anti elileptic drugs for pain in fibro with some dreadful side effects! trying an electro type therapy would mind me of the possibility that patient might start having convulsions/fits? all these therapies are " meddling inside our heads" and one wonders wether this can cause more harm than good?

That is exactly what ECT does. It is an electric current passed through the brain. It is not pleasant. In the 80s patients were anaethsitised but for too many years it was done while awake. The theory behind it was that it induced an epeliptic type fit which seemed to help people with severe depression. I'm trying to find out if is still done in the UK 🐸
