"guaifenesin" an over the counter medication that may reverse the effects of FmS & CFS/ME...!

Hiya Fibrofolks...

Has anyone heard of "guaifenesin" and the possibility that it may be able to reverse the effects of fibromyalgia syndrome FmS an Chronic Fatigue Syndrome CFS...!?

I'm reading a book at the minute called "What your doctor may not tell you about fibromyralgia"

I have been in severe pain, fatigue an many other symptoms of FmS and ME/CFS for a few years now an have pretty much exhausted the most of the medication on offer an their various side effects, the last one I tried was the BuTrans pain relief patches which did help with pain an sleep although I was fit for nothing else...!

Am wondering if anyone has any info on the use of "guaifenesin" an its possible ability to reverse the FmS condition...!?? Thanks.

Blessings, Hugh Belfast.

I wish you well if you do try this, it is essentially a cough remedy xx

Hi Hidden

Welcome - sorry to be the one to burst your bubble so to speak but I am sure that this protocol came to be nothing of any substance in the end.

I'll look for the information about this and post

What do you take now? It might be better to visit the Dr and discuss a medication review adding or replacing some already take if you think they are not being effective

All the best and blessing right back at you

Emma :)

I've found this where they talk about the Random Controlled Trials (RCT) of Guaifenesin and I think I am pretty sure there were others I remember found the same from further studies after the initial theory of Guaifenesin Protocol news spread through the Fibromyalgia community.

"The only RCT of guaifenesin found no significant effects on pain, other symptoms, or laboratory measures in a 12-month study."

Management of Fibromyalgia Syndrome (2004) Don L. Goldenberg, MD; Carol Burckhardt, PhD; Leslie Crofford, MD JAMA Vol 292, No. 19

This article does mention lots of medication they have found to be effective, maybe a medication review might be good idea.

Hope you find some relief soon x

I am in agreement with others, another person trying to make money at the expense of sufferers looking for a way out of pain!! Buyers beware I say!

Hiya Caz...

Yeah there is that possibility although this medication is not expensive and should be over the counter available as opposed to prescription...

Thanks, love n blessings to ya

Thanks for you input dear sister, much love n blessings :)

Hugh I would say to you, but for the hand of God I feel we sufferers will have to wait a while longer whilst slow research takes place.

I know of four people who are successfully using the guaifenesin protocol in Northern Ireland and are part of the fibro buddies on guaifenesin protocol Facebook page. It has 100% helped me; I’m still on the journey but I am improving all the time.

I know one or two people who have tried this for many years and to be honest they have found no health benefits to their fibro . In fact It nothing more than a cough syrup and can be found in over the counter cough mixtures.

Guaifenesin INN /ɡwaɪˈfɛnᵻsɪn/ or guaiphenesin, also glyceryl guaiacolate, is an expectorant drug sold over the counter and usually taken orally to assist the bringing up of phlegm from the airways in acute respiratory tract infections. Wikipedia

So how would taking cough mixture help anything in any way but may be a cough !! keep your money in your pocket or by a bottle of cough mixture it is sure to be cheaper than the book, Oh I forgot to say I have also read that book many moons ago. I got it from the local library.

Hiya Mo...

Yeah I got the book from library also so no expense there and picked up some cough bottles from pound shop to begin with...

Nevertheless, there is a cause so there must also be a cure!

Love n blessings to ya from N Ireland...

Hopeful Hugh :)

You can’t use cough bottles, you must get long acting guaifenesin(available from US or Germany).

You can’t buy the guaifenesin we need in the uk. You need to follow it to the letter for it to take effect.

Well, I'm glad I read all your replies 😀 as I was going to ask my Dr about this product! I think we would all love to hear that there is "something" out there that will stop the pain and suffering! 😡😡 I'm in a bad place at the moment, and would love to just feel happy again. 😢😢Hey ho......💞💞💞

I've been taking Guaifenesin for a few months now and I'm a different person. It might not help everyone but it has definitely helped me. Before I was so stiff I couldn't wiggle my feet. It loosened up all my joints and I don't have the sharp, shooting pain all over. If you try it, there's nothing to lose. You will know right away if it works or not. It actually made me feel worse at first but that's a sign that it's working. All I'm saying is it's worth a shot. I was willing to do anything because I was so miserable.

I haven't changed my diet but I don't use toothpaste anymore because the mint (salicylates) block Guaifenesin. It's only the salicylates that you apply to your skin not the ones that you eat that block it.

I have just been helped so much by Guaifenesin that I wish other people would try it and see if it helps them. There's no harm in it so why not?

Hey Sarah...

That's exactly what I was wanting an needing to here!

It may not work for everyone but is definitely worth looking into and trying...

Glad things are looking up for you...

Much love n blessings to ya from N Ireland...

Please try it! You must read the book to know how to follow it properly.

Purchased it from Boots and tried it religiously for six months - it didn't work!

I gave up so many foods as well just to ensure I was sticking religiously to the protocol.

It actually made my body produce more phlegm than normal and there were times when I was convinced that the mucus would suffocate me in the night!

I started to feel better about a week after giving it up and returning to my previous diet etc.

I hope you have better results.

Hello Hugh, I am wondering if you in the end tried the guaifenesin protocol? I have had fibromyalgia for five years(post csection trauma) although didn’t know what my pain was until I completely crashed last year, unable to get off the sofa and in so much pain 24/7 for 7 months. GP has only ever offered meds(some made my symptoms worse, none were effective). Anyways I was extremely low and felt that unless I could find something to help, there was no point in continuing as I was(I had no life). I started to research fibromyalgia(I prob have ME too as I literally couldn’t move, didn’t bother going to dr;no help in these areas). I came across the protocol, ordered pure guaifenesin from the USA(none available in Uk) organised my products to be salicylate free(a must for it to work) and off I went. It took three months to feel a difference and I am no way ‘normal’ but I AM functioning and areas where I had extreme pain in my muscles have def loosened(it reverses your symptoms rather mask them). My pain is now reduced by 80% and fatigue around 50% from where I was. I am a particularly high doser(everyone is different; most only need 2 tablets a day, I take 6) and my bill per month is about £60 (price of a treatment or two that were not helping me in the past). Please please try it if you haven’t already and anyone else who wants to improve rather than maintain. I first came across it by watching Lorna effys videos on YouTube.

Hi ballymac

Are you still on guaifenesin? And if so, are you improving?

I just read about it today and am thinking of trying it

All the best

The so called Guaifenesin Protocol has been widely discredited as little more than quackery. The drug reduces cough mucus. Those who get benefit from it probably were misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia to start with.
