Hi. Yes, I too suffer from awful muscle cramps.mainly in my calves. Sometimes I can feel a big knot there, which is such an awful feeling! I have explained this to my GP & even asked for a blood test for Magnesium deficiency or if I could just take a Magnesium supplement, but was told to just take a Multi Vitamin daily. Your Dr may be of more help to you. Good Luck! x

I've just remembered, years ago now, I had muscle spasms in my chest in middle and I thought I was having a heart attack. Went to doc & he said, people actually pass out with the pain.

Whole of middle of chest was going into big knot.

I used to buy crampex tablets ..They always seemed to help...but they have stopped making them...a nuts told me that 2 of the main ingredients in them were vitamin b and vitamin d...I have started taking those and the cramping in my calves aren't just as frequent..I also find eating a banana helps...or they are less frequent when I drink a lot of vita coco coconut water...bananas and coconut water are both high in potassium.

Hi Anne, yes I do and have from a very young age. Cramps in toes, legs, hip, fingers, even big area of my back sometimes goes to big cramp & it kind of scares me a bit, don't know why, it's horrible.

I get regular muscle spasms all over my body, even in my jaw and throat.

I do take quinine every day and they do help. If I forget to take it just for 1 day I know I have the next day.

I also take amitriptyline which also relax the muscles so helps. I stil get it even with these meds but no where near so bad or frequent.

Hope this helps

Peace, luv n light

Jan, Does your gp write quinine or do you buy over the counter? ? Peck🐤

Midori profile image
Midori in reply topeck

Peck; Try Tonic water or Bitter Lemon first, Quinine tablets can have some very nasty side effects. Tonic and Bitter Lemon have smaller amounts and can be just as effective.

Yeah she prescribes it but I've had it for years now Peck. I know in a lot of countries it is not available because of what it is. I don't think you can buy it over counter.

When I lived in Spain I couldn't get it and they gave me vitamin C tablets and told to drink tonic water, you have to look though cos they don't all have quinuine in them.

peck in reply toJanet28

We could buy it over the counter until about 2 years ago.It worked very well for him.Hus gp gives him something else now but he is our of them.Since retiring he don't have the problem nearly as mucb.Peck🐤

Thanks Jan I'm getting them all over too I already have amatriptyline but nothing seams to work been in tears all day with them in ribs bk legs xxx thank you for info xxx

Janet28 profile image
Janet28 in reply toannmason

What dose of Amitriptline are you on ?

annmason profile image
annmason in reply toJanet28

10 mg x3 xx

Janet28 profile image
Janet28 in reply toannmason

Ok well I don't know how long you have had them for but you do get very tolerant to them very quickly and the dose normally has to be slowly increased to give the same effect. Normally starts off at 25mg and can be increased weekly in some cases till it helps.

Better to take at night so not zonked out all day, but again, you do get used to them.

You can have up to about 200 mg I think, but don't quote me on that. I take 50 to 100 mg at night, depending on how I am feeling really. I also take 10 or 20 mg in morning if I'm struggling with pain in the morning.

You can also have them in slow release, which I found really helped me when I was having a real bad flare up.

The thing is, what works for one person doesn't always necessarily work for another.

It really is all about trial and error with all the drugs and Amitriptyline have a lot of side effects and takes a while to get right but I would say, in my opinion, baring in mind, I am not a doctor. I did have some medication training and I would think you probably need to increase it. I would make another appointment and tell GP and tell him its not helping and he will probably tell you to take bit more.

The thing is, did they work or help in any way when you first took them ?.

What else do you take for the pain ?

Luv Jan xx

Can also be lack of salt in hot weather! Because of the loss of body fluids in the heat common or garden salt can help. Doubt Drs would be happy with that these days, but when I lived in the heat (South Africa) I used to put salt on bread and butter etc. It helped cramp in my legs. (Sorry to butt in there Peck, but if I don't do it while I remember I will never do it lol). Xx🐸

I used to live in a South Africa Sorebones. What part were you in? We lived in Pinetown, near Durban. x

Sorebones profile image
Sorebones in reply toFibroAnnie57

We were in Sasolburg, Witbank and Benoni all in the Highveld. Miss the heat sometimes. Went to Durbs on holiday, but preferred the Wild Coast. Many happy times at the Wild Coast Sun. And the Swazi Sun, Sun City....... Good times. We were there for 11 years. What about you? 🐸

FibroAnnie57 profile image
FibroAnnie57 in reply toSorebones

We lived in Pinetown for around 3/4 years. Loved it there & made many friends. Enjoyed the social life. All the BBQs, at weekends etc! We have been back 4 times since. But only once visited Durban, as can't really go to that area now, so the other times we've been to Cape Town. Beautiful Country! X

Sorebones profile image
Sorebones in reply toFibroAnnie57

Oh yes! Weekends. I vaguely remember them lol. We could plan things as the weather wouldn't spoil them. It is very different now. Such a shame. Everything has been run into the ground. We still have friends there and life is very different. They virtually live in a prison. We left when I needed a gun! I wasn't prepared to have one. Fantastic memories though!! Sigh........ 🐸

Hi again Sorebones. Yes at least we have our fantastic memories to look back on!  Such a shame that such a beautiful Country has gone to waste! x

Hi annmason

I am so genuinely sorry to read that you are suffering with this issue, and I sincerely hope that you can find some resolution to the problem. There are medications that can be taken for this if your GP agrees that they are suitable to prescribe for you?

I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

My feet cramps leave me walking around the house at all hours trying to relieve the pain. I suffer with  Constant leg pain when walking so I have to balance my actions. The hand cramp actually deform my hand during an attack. I have to  squeeze the affected hand with the other one  and massage it until the cramp releases it hold on it.

I get awful muscle spasms in my upper arms - I think in my case it's related to the arthritis in my hands and wrists.  I also cramps in my calves - not sure what that's related to.  It's not fun, I've sometimes been up in the night in agony until it passes.

are you talking muscle cramps? I was advised I was low on salts especially quinine and so I drink low cal tonic water.

Ive had cramps and wondered if it was the steroids ime down to 2.5 a day till saturday ive experienced some pain, i had a really bad night last night,  i can bear the pain its the lack of movement i cant stand. The prednisalone have relieved this. I dont want to stay on them because of the side affects, my son had to have keyhole surgery which unfortunatley reversed itself so looks like he will have to have it done again.

Hi, I have cramps and spasms in my legs, especially at night, my leg would jump in the air some of the spasms were that strong, used to give me a fright when your sitting quietly in bed, no warning and it jumps. My fibro friend suggested I ask the doc for Methocarbamol, they relax the muscles, have had them for over a wk now and no spasms so far, seem to be working xx

No problem, hope you get it sorted. I just told my doctor I couldn't take anymore I wanted to cut my legs or my feet off. Up until then I think I was too soft with my doc, so my fibro friend wrote down everything I needed to say to her, including name of these meds and I told her I wanted them, tc let me know how you get on xx
