Smelling smoke

I quit smoking about a year and half ago. Sometimes when I am around smokers the next day and for several days later I will smell smoke.  This time I don't even recall being around anyone smoking and I keep smelling it. Eventually it just goes away although it is making me feel like I am crazy. No one smells anything but me?!

Hi Jm26

I am so genuinely sorry to read that you are experiencing weird smells in this way, and there have been numerous posts over the years from other members who have experienced such phantom smells. I have pasted you 3 links below to similar posts to yours but there are many more:

Hi! I have always been a non smoker and can smell smoke from a hundred yards away as the same with alcohol. Light is a biggie too hence shades but sound is the worst, not just loud music but my wife with her angelic Belfast tones and the sounds of a busy family house. Most of the time I wear earplugs with chill out music as well as all night. Oversensitivity to sound is a big one and iced to love gigs and concerts. Maybe smell is for you.

When you quit smoking, your nasal receptors take awhile to get back some of their sensitivity. I think this is what has happened with you, you are smelling things again that you lost before. When my parents quit, after a year or two they could smell things they hadn't smelt for years.

Personally, having never smoked my nose is very sensitive, When my windows are open I can smell my neighbours  smoke!

Often over sensitivity to smell, sound and food/substance intolerances is a sign of guy imbalance - the more sensitivities s person has the greater that imbalance is what we usually find. At The Healthworkshop we have an intolerance tester and we usually find that if we start by balancing the gut many of these issues disappear. Autoimmune disorders improve, energy levels increase, improved outlook on life follows. Along with B12, D3, Magnesium I find that probiotics are critical to improving the immune system which in turn reduces the number of sensitivities s person has. If candida is a factor (and it usually is) then we will follow a protocol using Noble Naturals colloidal silver along with L Glutamine to facilitate the cleanse along with dietary protocol (very clean eating and sugar removal - to include wheat - gluten is overpoweringly indicated in autoimmune disorders - in our findings EVERY time) 💜

That should have said gut imbalance not guy - although they sometimes play a part lol 💜

I too stopped smoking 18 months ago, after I have been shopping just passing someone on the street leaves a lingering smell of smoke, it seems to get every where. My Dr said it is my senses coming back, I hope it is the same for you X gentle hugs.   Izzy

Yes I thought I was going abit loopy when I started to smell things that I knew were not there.  When I was diagnosed with fibro and looked up the different symptoms I found this was one of them.  We would make good sniffer dogs.x

I am very sensitive to light and sound now, used to love a dance floor with both loud music and flashing lights......now I prefer sitting in total silence on my lonesome, even sunlight bothers me now and fibro put paid to the dancing too! I also smell various perfumes at odd times through the day although there is only me at home! xx

Probably your subconscious trying to temp you back to the ways of the lepers lol. I gave up for a year, then fell off the wagon. I imagined I smelled smoke in the strangest of places. Don't think it was Fibro to blame this time. My neighbour smokes outside at his back door. That's where I was getting the smell from 🐸

I've had fibromyalgia for 20+ years and for about the last 10 I've been smelling not only cigarette smoke but cigar and pipe smoke as well (I'm a non smoker) and also very strong coffee (something I don't have in the house) and toast. I genuinely began to believe I had a poltergeist so it's very interesting to find it maybe a fibro thing!

I quit smoking 10 years ago now, I still smell smoke when it's not present, especially whilst sitting in my chair in the lounge.

I don't know whether the smoke is oozing through the walls from next door like some people claim it can, or whether it's coming through our dodgy double glazing, or whether I'm just going totally mental...

I've accused the kids of smoking a few times as I've smelt smoke when they've come in from school, even though a couple times of sniffing their clothes after the first accusation, I cannot smell anything.

So, no, you're not the only one.

Favourite smell - that bacon sandwich smell ...Hmmm pity am on low fat eating plan but am going to crack on with my Lindt bunnies..HAPPY EASTER!

I have given up smoking for nearly five years. O/H and son still smoke in the house when I am not here, they are not supposed to. But I can smell it in the walls the curtains everything, I can't breath. I hate the smell with avengance and this is coming from me a person who said " I love smoking if you don't like it I won't smoke around you but I will never give up " how illnesses change you xxx

has anyone thought this could be totally health unrelated? I am very in tune with my spiritual side and often smell various things with no earthly explanation. have you had a loved one that's died that smoked? sometimes it's there way to send a smell, a sound. or  to move an object just to let you know they are there? and watching over you especially if you are going through difficult times x

When I have a migraine-and have now developed migraine with aura first, I say that my nose could rival a bloodhound.  I think that my sense of smell was always strong and maybe migraine( because of what it is- not "just" a headache) has increased my sense of smell all the time. I am the person who gets up on Metro(our underground) to move if a person somewhere near me smells of smoke, perfume, BO and more commonly now, weed( marijuana). I have become ill because occasionally a very inconsiderate woman uses nail polish on the train. I need to move to another car when that happens.

Thank you so much for all of your responses . I'm glad to know I'm not crazy and when you Google smelling smoke it tends to be a tad scary! I'm still smelling smoke but sometimes it leaves for a few minutes more so when I'm not indoors.  I hope everyone has a Happy Easter and less nose sensitivity :)

I gave up (Cold turkey) over 5 years ago and it was the best thing I have ever done. I now cannot stand to be near those who do smoke or the smell of nicotine as it makes me gag. I am embarrassed to think that I smelt like that after smoking a cigarette I know it is a personal choice and if you wan to smoke then that is your right I am just stating that for me it was the best decision I ever made

I agree Heliboy911 I cannot stand to be around smokers either. I am very sensitive to the smell now. Luckily for whatever reason I haven't smelled smoke for a few days now.
