Treadmill
Hi
The tread mill is an impact exercise, I find that swimming is the beat form of exercise .
I am just about to try Pilates it's slow no impact.
Try at a jam before you buy at least, I also have a vibrating stand on machine I use it just once a week when I can sometimes enen that is to much for the muscles.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I use a treadmill regularly, but just do a brisk walk. Sometimes I break into a jog for a few minutes.
I find balance is an issue at times. It depends how Im feeling. My knees get stiff and ache but I find this exercise helps.
Good luck, take it slow at first but it does help.
David.
Thanks david i just want it for gentle walking in the hope i can feel more confident walking around outside, I'm doing the nhs 12 wk diet as well and I've lost 12 st in 10 wks ππ
Well done with the diet. Im planning a diet, or rather just cutting back more.
The treadmill is good for walking at any pace.
I have an ipod to help with the boredom.
I was told I walk round like an old man sometimes, (Im only 50)
I use the treadmill to keep moving.
Exercise is important.
David
The nhs 12 wk diet isn't really a diet it's a change in life style i swore i would never count calories but the myfitnessapp does it all for you once you get your bmi sorted it tells you how many calories you need to lose weight there's also a wkly weigh in with the 12 wk forum and it's all free yahh i don't know why it's called the 12 wk diet when most of us are going to be on it for years lol sorry for going on and on π
I wouldn't buy one. Try out one at the gym but beware of going too fast too soon. It can be very tempting just to up the pace and then suffer horribly afterwards especially if you haven't exercise for a while.
I'm not sure why you don't feel happy just walking outside. Fresh air, things to look at and no cost. All that's needed is a good jacket in case it rains and decent shoes. Your need trainers for a treadmill anyway as the impact on joints can be quite damaging without proper footwear.
I find walking painful because of osteoarthritis but I try to get out for 1/2 hour every day. Its the best thing for mood and I can regulate just how much and how fast I walk ( not fast sadly) . Sometimes it looks quite miserable but it rare that I don't go and get pleasure from doing so.
Good luck
Dee
I find a treadmill hurts my knees too much - but then I have osteoarthritis in my knees (and ankles). What I use for low impact exercise is a recumbent cycle. I have to use a recumbent one (ie. with back support) because of back problems. The cycle is great as there's no pressure on the knees/ankles so it doesn't hurt at all. I also do pilates/gentle stretching too.
Just be careful with a treadmill. If you're quite fit then it should be fine but if you have a lot of leg problems it could make them worse. Try one at the gym first and see how you get on with it.
I'm not fit at all and i also have osteo arthritis, I'm just looking to doing gentle walk's no jogging, I've tried the bike but it hurt my back and shoulders due to cervical spondylosis
That's why a recumbent bike is best Rosie - supports your back. Google "recumbent bike" or look for one on one of the online sites. We got ours at a good price on a certain site which sounds like it might be a rainforest! (not sure if I'm allowed to mention it here ). Of course, you can try a recumbent cycle at the gym too - just to see if it'd be OK for you first.
Rosie, I regularly use a static exercise bike that folds away and sits nicely in a corner or cupboard, this helps strengthen my knees and legs, recommended by my Chiropractor and physio.
You can get one for approx Β£60 - Β£70 on Amazon or ebay The sales are on...........
Hope this helps you xx

A treadmill is good for maintaining mobility, I use one at the gym, its quite a vision, there's me walking very slowly next to bright young things running like the wind but I wont be put off xxx
It is not something that I have tried, but I would like to gneuinely and sincerely wish you all the best of luck with this if you decide to give ti a go.
All my hopes and dreams for you

Oh how I hated the treadmill before fibro!
So I started by walking so that I wouldn't be able to converse with a P/T.
As it got easier I added intervals of slow jogging. Like the slowest u can, I concentrated on going through the feet to warm them up and to relax and lengthen my spine.
I also walk while doing neck n shoulder rolls, interval with hill walking paying attention to your posture.
I used to hate the treadmill cos my hyperlordosis n weak core bt treadmill has helped.
Keep moving! πβΊοΈ was at my worst when I curled I to a ball, I do yoga and foamroll daily. I'm still in a lot of pain bt love endorphins, I trained as a dancer so being active keeps depression at bay and I do what I can on each day. Maybe less maybe nothing.
Happy treadmilling π
Thanks jaja 2014 I will try to follow your example βΊ
Hi I attended the expert patient programme this year. I have both an exercise bike and a treadmill. Before Fibro I could run a mile in under 13 minutes. I have found the treadmill impossible since being diagnosed with fibro. I was told this isbecause it is an impact exercise and to stick with the exercise bike. I can walk but only at my own pace. I find hills impossible. Treadmills are expensive. See if you could attend a leisure centre first to see how you get on as we are all different. you might find it ok.
Good luck.
I used to run on a treadmill 45 mins a day cardio run until last yr when my knees started to give way so I can't use the treadmill any more that broke my heart to come from running to not being able to do any thing xx
Running is far too adventurous for me, i would be happy if it could just build up my strengh for a slow walk lol xx
I'm the same now bearly move now lol x
Can you still use it for slow walking or does it go too fast? Xx
I don't use it at all now but i guess u can use it for slow walking in a way it is good for that but I refuse to use the treadmill now xx
I used to use a treadmill a lot when I used to run... My advice is to try to one at a gym first. Also as someone has said don't go too fast too soon. They are useful in that you can see exactly how far you've walked and if you get a good one you can change it to inclines and vary the exercise etc. Also they are low impact. I found them quite easy on my joints but my fibro kicked in so no more running, but I have to admit if I was going to join a gym again I'd go back on one. Also take an ipod and listen to some podcasts or some music - you'll get bored very quickly. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.
