Hello everyone!

Just wanted to query with you,

I used to take Amitriptyline before bed and it didn't help much and was changed to duloxetine which again doesn't help much.

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these or if anyone is taking anything different :)

Thank you

Hi Ryan. I take amitryptiline at night. It helps me sleep. Not sure if it helps the pain very much though. All these meds affect everyone differently. I think it's trial and error. Good luck

Thanks Julie, I did speak to my doctor today and he recommended trying them again so I am going to give it another month and see! I think I see my rheumatologist again soon so I will wait until then :)

Thank you

I'm taking 60mg at the moment which I think is the maximum, I will go back to Amitriptyline soon if I find no more benefit :)

in reply toryanwhite05

Ahh. Ok. I take 40mg but I think it can go higher. Lol after itself hun.

Yeah after speaking to the doctor today he said I could take up to 70mg of the amitriptyline which seems really high as I was taking 20-35mg before lol.

Hi Ryan

I take my duloxetine in the morning as it makes me pretty wired if I take at night. The benefit I have found is that it helps with the pain during the day and also helps to make me feel more myself.

I did try taking at night for a few weeks but as I said - it just kept me awake far longer than usual and my brain was just buzzing. I spoke to my GP and she was happy with the change.

Hope this helps.

Jane :-)

Hello Jane,

This is what I find is that I don't feel tired before bed but in the day I cannot stop yawning!

I'll give this a try and see how I get on.

Regards,

Ryan

Hello,

Ahh thats fantastic, I have had the conversation with my GP about switching to lyrica but the only thing I worry about at the moment is coming down on my gabapentin slowly and increasing slowly on the lyrica.

However I definitely think I will have to bite the bullet and do it soon.

Regards,

Ryan

I think your going in the right direction Ryan Gabapentin is for restless leg syndrome I thought regard A M

Hi Ryan

I am so genuinely sorry to read that and I sincerely hope that you can find some suitable medication for yourself. I take Nortriptyline and Pregabalin at night along with a cocktail of other drugs for different conditions. They work fine and to a certain degree but I have not really found anything that completely takes the pain away.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Hi had a discussion about this today with GP. , I did get some sleep with amertriptyline but it didn't help with the pain and because of other autoimmune issues I was swaped to duluxtine ,initially put on 60 mg but was put up to 90 mg last summer ,I haven't slept much since I was put on it but it does help with neuralgia pain however I have been reduced back down to 60 mg today for 3 weeks to see if it makes any difference with my symptoms as I do still get overwhelmed , if there is a down ward spiral I am being put on 120 mg to not only help with my pain but also to help with my sleep issues and my mood ,but I was given sleeping pills 6 weeks ago as I had gone for at least a month without a proper nights sleep and was only lightly napping ,sleeping pills only worked the first night and haven't worked since but I took pritease two nights ago in desperation and I slept ,I have discussed this today I said with GP and it has been decided that the antihistamine doesn't interfere with anything else I am taking so once a week to get some sleep I am going to take that because it works for me ,perhaps you should go back to your Dr and have a chat

Hope this helps but please talk to your Dr before you do anything

Shadow good luck ☺️

I take amitriptyline. 80mg at tea time and find it lets me get a decent sleep. Does it help otherwise? No. I'm just so grateful I'm not up all night any more x🐸

I have tried nearly all the antidepressants, they work for about a couple of months then work the opposite way and make me agitated. As I said on my last post have since found out was undermedicated and have pernicious anaemia as well as antibodies Now feeling a lot better since increase in thyroxine.Got to be careful to get right dose and not overdo it. Waiting to try natural in a couple of weeks. Good luck.

I've been on duloxetine for a while. I tried to wean off it so I could try another anti-depressant for my mood and that's when I realised how effective it is on my pain.

I take it at night but not associated it with sleep issues.

Amitriptaline helped me sleep but I felt groggy/hungover the next day.

I occasionally take a sleeping pill but never more than 2 days in a row as it loses effectiveness.

Hi Ryanwhite,

I don't take either of the drugs you have mentioned, I've tried them both but for some reasons and I can't remember what they were, I stopped taking them.

I now take 2 Clonazepam just before I go to sleep and they really send me off into a great sleep.

Look it up on the NHS pages and if it sounds like the type of medical help you require just before sleep, go and pay a visit to your GP.

Have a nice day,

Best wishes

Lottie.

Hi Ryan ,iv been on it twice ,iv got ME ,FIBRO ,and lots more problems, I was first on it in 2000 ,for 10years I was on 150 mg ,slept like a baby ,then 5 yrs ago a new Doctor took me off them ,cause I have other health problems ,and I'm on 48 tablets aday ,so off I come ,nothing to take in its place ,all hell broke loose ,I can't sleep ,in so much pain ,and its affected my Bipolar as well.so went back on it again only 30mg ,still can't sleep, and now it's causing big problems with me going a toilet. That tablet is also for persons BED Wetting ,Nerve pain ,Antidepressants .You also need to be very careful when you start taking them ,in crease the dosage slowly ,say the Doctor gives you 50mg ,then you start the first week on 10mg and next week 20mg ,its because it affects the Brain so much.My last Doctor was excellent ,he would read up on everything before giving me any drugs .I hope iv helped and not hundred you ,or offended you .

Iv got my mum on this drug as well as my cousin ,and neither was given this information v,it made my mum I'll for 18monthes ,she couldn't get out of bed ,she just slept ,she didn't even eat or drink ,we had to keep waking her up .so I know from experience what this drug dos to people.

Take care .

Hello Jacqui,

Thank you so much for your reply, I also have ME and fibromyalgia. I am going to continue with the duloxetine until I run out and then I will start on the amitriptyline again I think as the majority say it has been helpful.

Thank you very much for your reply,

Hope you are all okay,

Ryan

Amitriptyline does work but the amount any individual takes depends on other medication they are taking. I was recently taken off Cipralex because mixing it with Amitriptyline can cause heart problems. I now take Mirtazapine which after a few months is at the max dose of 45 mg. My body quickly become used to the lower doses.

Now back to Amitriptyline , my doctor prescribed 10 mg for years so I stopped taking them because it didn't help with sleep just made me feel more fatigued during the days. After a lot of research I went back to my doctor about increasing the dose. To cut a long story down I found taking 50 mg during summer and 75 mg during winter meant I could sleep. My pain levels have dropped and I sleep for at least 8 hours every night after years of little sleep. I take the Amitriptyline at 8pm and it takes a few hours but I always fall asleep.

We are all different and I know many don't like taking any medication. But I would recommend you to talk to your Doctor and try Amitriptyline again. I have struggled for 12 years but this year has been my best and I can only put that down to getting better sleep. Started to Volunteer driving , taking people who are too ill to use public transport to medical appointments. I have bad days , especially when I have to deal with people in wheel chairs. It can put me in bed for a few days but my mental health is better than its been for decades.

Fibro is real but it is neurological rather than a physical complaint. Quality sleep and avoiding stress seem to be the key to managing our condition.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I completely understand what you mean, even though I have been diagnosed with this condition I still want to be seen as normal and I carry on as normal but then you feel all the pain in the evenings.

I hope you're well and try to take it as easy as possible!

I used to take Amytriptilline; but I had to come off it as I was having dreams of sitting on the toilet, and with a dodgy bladder, nearly cause a few accidents. So now I take Nortryptilline, which I find suits me better. Both these drugs work by Muscle relaxation, which may be why you feel drowsy next day. Try taking them a couple of hours earlier, it works better for me this way.
