Morning You have my sympathy I have had a Hiatus Hernia for many years now. I control it with Omeprazole. I take the tablet first thing in the morning and then through out the day I try to eat small gentle meals. Nothing to violently spicy equally it does not need to be totally bland.

If on the rare occasion it decides it will be naughts I make sure I m sitting up or leaning against something. Milk often soothes it but just a little. Don't mis other indigestion tablets with the omeprezole. Gradually you will become its master.

Best of luck go gently

Yes I agree with gins completely and not mixing the omeprezole with any other indigestion meds is vital, as it can cause harm. Let's hope you can get on top of this very soon anbuma :-)

Best wishes :-)

thanks guys.i dont take any other indigestion remedies.im on two omeprazole a day.take one in the morning at least half hour before eating-so take dog s out then have something to eat maybe when I get home.mine wasnt diagnosed until I had the endoscopy couple of months ago-but possibly had it for two years before that as had "the cough" for that time and not diagnosed .told different by different doctors(gp and A&E)A&E said to stop it and then after endoscopy prescribed it again.i only ever have breakfast and a small meal as never hungry.i have never been one to have spicy foods -spiciest ive ever had is a chicken korma and that was years ago.,only drink water or squash.

gins -does yours prevent sleep -I cough as soon as I lie down .wish I could sleep sitting up!!

has anyone had a hiatus hernia operated on and is that some thing that can be done or is treatment only meds?

in reply toanbuma

Anbuma, just from personal experience with family member, who has H.Hernia, which causes silent reflux,no indigestion or acid so would not be aware of it.but it has progressed to causing on occasions in past tho thankfully not recently, cough syncope which is where breathe shuts off and causes sudden collapse, which fourtunaly rights itself almost immediately.there is no awareness of passing out or feeling feint it is sudden.from this experience and talking with others my humble advice would be,be extremely careful if you are thinking of pushing for an op to correct the hernia it can often be a dicey procedure and there is no knowing beforehand how any individual will fair.many are ok but many either don't live to tell the tale or are then plagued with other problems due to the procedure.it is NOT to be undertaken lightly,if one can get by and get along ok-ish with the condition with the medication overall that is safer it seems.OK it's not like having a perfectly working stomach and digestion as when younger but if it's manageable apparently it is best not to operate.

From what I recall ( and this is from years ago) it is/ was a very tricky operation to perform due to location of the hernia, things may have changed in recent times. Lou xx

read today that the op can be performed laparoscopically (if thats how you spell it).not that I want it.will ask when I next see DR D

Hello Anbuma,

Please can I mention that although others may have Hiatus Hernia and can maybe give their personal experience, this is not really the place to discuss these issues.

I would suggest you firstly look for your information on either NHS Choices or patient.co.uk and then if wanting to talk to others with this issue then there may be other forums you can join (using a search engine to find these) Although we are happy to help, we must emphasise we are a charity who advises about Fibromyalgia.

Here is some links which may help;

nhs.uk/Conditions/Hernia-hi...

patient.co.uk/health/hiatus...

Please can I ask if we can stick to all things Fibro

Many Thanks

Emma :)

Hi anbuma

I am so sorry to read that your hiatus hernia is playing up, and you have my complete sympathy with this as they are so unpleasant. I would discuss this with the doctor and see what can be done?

Take care

Sweetheart I have the same trouble and then some. Try Zegrid it's sold over the counter and I've taken all of them and this one works better than any I've tried. Hoping this helps until you get some answers. xxxx Mitzi

Me too, I went for a procedure, was supposed to be knocked out for it whilst a telescope went down to have a look, only i came round half way, started reaching for the tube, the doctor called a nurse to hold my hands back whilst they double dosed me to knock me back out, I still remeber seeing all the blood as they pulled the tube out whilst I gagged. Horrible experience, but was later told about the sliding hiatus hernia I had, so am also on Omeprazole.

My question now is that, am I on this for life, I need to go back and ask my GP now as i still get the chest pains, so guess the medication isn't really doing much good.

Not what you're looking for?
