my grandson has melatonin in liquid form, he has autism and hardly slept [ neither did we] he drifts off quite happily now I'm not an expert but I believe it is the sleep hormone, wishing you well x

The doc said it helps the body fall into a natural sleep. So glad to hear it helped your grandson. I think when you have a good nights sleep you can face anything the day brings. Thank you

Hi can I first say I sincerely hope it works for you. Some years back my doctor prescribed melatonin I can't honestly say where it was the pronlonged release sort but unfortunately it had no effect for me apart from feeling a bit groggy in the day my actual nightime sleeping didn;t improve but I think anything is worth a try as ewe are all individualsx

Think I have reached that stage where I would try anything for a nights sleep. Thank you

I have tried 6mg prolongued release Melatonin, as well as 2mg tablets. I find that if I combine it with other medication that suits me, it seems to help that medication work better, but otherwise it stops me sleeping altogether - I have paradoxical effects to a lot of medication including almost all medication that is meant to make me sleep or is meant to have a side effect of making me feel sleepy - the only sleeping medications that work for me are Clonazepam, and Atarax which is an anti-histamine (other antihistamines stop me sleeping), and even they only help to an extent so I take them once or twice a week to have a better night's sleep and a bit of catch up. But just to say what I do find really useful - talking books which I have on my iPod. I listen to them all night and if I am awake they entertain me so that I don't get stressed, and because I am relaxed and awake I keep dipping in and out of sleep, and I find that if I relax throughout the night, then in the morning I feel nearly as good as having a good night's sleep. I listen with earphones and my other half can't hear a thing so he is undisturbed by my nightly entertainment. My number one book is Catch 22, which is quite soporific and I listen to it if all else fails!!! Hope you have better luck with Melatonin than I had. Love and hugs x

I currently take melatonin for non refreshed sleep. It does help to some extent, but I wish I could have a higher dose to see if it could keep me awake longer in the day.

Good luck, mark

Thanks all for the helpful replies. I listen to relaxation music with my headphones . Started this about 2 months ago and although 9 times out of 10 it does not make me sleep it stops me getting aggitated and frustrated because im not sleeping. This I find in turn makes you feel a bit better the next day, even though

You are really tired.

Hello Lekcam,

I stumbled upon this research article which might be of interest as mentions melatonin, however please bear in mind it is considered he collective studies should be done and reviewed before efficacy is supported by evidence.
