Hi, has anybody been offered mirapex, which is given to Parkinsons sufferers.?

I have been reading some articles suggesting FMS is predominantly a neurological condition involving a reduction in dopamine. Chronic stress in childhood and throughout life or a physical cause e.g. car crash raising stress levels seems to be a precursor to FMS. Low levels of serotonin another neurotransmitter are seen in FMS and it affects HPA axis, also elevated levels of substance P. In my case having suffered chronic stress and post traumatic stress this is ringing true for me.

Mirapex is used in Parkinsons disease as patients are low on dopamine. So my question is has anyone been offered a Parkinsons medication and how are you managing the side effects e.g. nausea?

What do you think? I'm going to ask my GP about it. Not sure if it is licenced for fms in UK. I read it is licensed by the ELAR (European league Against Rheumatism) for FMS and there have been trials in Switzerland and USA.

Hello vajrayogin1,

I take Pramiprexole it was prescribed by the late Professor Davies team at Guys Hospital London back in 2009 when I had been bedbound for approx 2 years. I found personally it didn't seem to directly help with pain but I feel it did eventually, as by helping with fatigue I was able to start to mobilise which helped reduce my pain experience. I managed gentle exercise along with some acupuncture from NHS (3 sessions only which apparently isn't available in my area anymore) and had rehab too.

Here is the information on the FibroAction website;

Hope this helps

Hi Emma, thanks for replying and sending the helpful links. Interestingly I take venlafaxine and have done for over 20 years which is the only anti-depressant that has ever worked for me. On reading the drug info I see that this med also works on dopamine! Also I think all fibro patients are unique and present differently my research is leading me to believe that amytryptiline may not be the best med for me. At present I take 25-50mg amytryptiline the research suggests that after 8 weeks this may not be of any help and I have taken this for 3 years since diagnosis along with my 75mg dose of venlafaxine. However it's good to have a decent nights sleep! Then there's the constipation and various meds for this etc and the 2 stone weight gain! I also have tramadol which is only used in emergencies along with sickness med. I must admit it worries me how easily I can get hold of these drugs as a patient. Although legally prescribed my view is to be very cautious, these are powerful mind alterating drugs which can be miss-used.

Hi, I have tried Mirapex but unfortunately as I went up the dosage the side effects increased, as I reached the 1.02mg the next morning I couldn't move in bed for overwhelming sickness which lasted most of the day. But I have been intolerant to all other meds that have been prescribed. Unfortunately there are a lot of us that become intolerant to any meds, so if you are lucky enough to not have bad side effects then I would say stick with it for couple of months and see if your symptoms improve.

Hi, Butterfly72. Thank you for your reply. I am going to discuss with my GP next time I see her about Mirapex etc. Don't fancy the nausea that's why I leave my tramadol well alone except for emergencies. I too can have some side effects with meds so my Gp always prescribes ant-nausea meds as well. Sitting on the fence a little with this one.
