Most of us, I should think, emjane! It seems to go with fibro, just to add to the other joys. :(

I've just been diagnosed with this :( I've been very down today. Just wanted to cry. Its either I have a healthier bowel or I don't walk! Wish we had a treatment for our condition not tablets and tablets and more tablets.

Yes but by a process of elimination I know what triggers mine so I have it well under control.. Chocolate , all artificial sweetners especially aspartame and sorbitol .. If I keep these out I am fine ....

Good pain relief, plus careful diet will usually sort out your problems.

Try not to lose heart, as most of us manage a reasonable quality of life after we've worked out what suits us as individuals.

You don't say how your IBS affects you; is it pain, constipation, diarrhoea, or a mixture of all three? Most of these symptoms can be managed effectively, and it's not always pills - though some are very useful!

My pain management is rubbish at present my consultant gave me a different drug without telling me and it made pain worse and none of my normal meds are working. Pain, bloated tummy and constipation x

Ah - that's a nasty combination. If you can relieve the constipation, the pain and bloating will almost certainly get easier.

Wholegrains and plenty of fruit and veg should help this - I find porridge and Weetabix the best, and a daily dose of cod liver oil capsules is also good - don't ask me why!

As several members have commented, avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague, keep consumption of fatty and sugary foods to a minimum, and make sure you drink plenty of water. If this doesn't help after 3-5 days, then you will need to go back to your GP and ask for a medication review, You may need a mild laxative such as lactulose.

I do hope you feel better soon! :)

Ohhh sorry x I wouldn't use lactulose for IBS. You're best cutting out the wheat and dairy....and drinking more plain tap water. Lactulose is a sugar based thing that can encourage the Candida xxx

May I just add here that lactulose, tho' a sugar, is not absorbed by the body, and in research has not been found to have any adverse effect on patients vulnerable to yeast type infections.

This makes it particularly suitable for the treatment of constipation associated with IBS

Hi, yes the triad of depression, fibro and IBS go well together especially if you also have a history of early life trauma. I have all three although they are all variable and the depression is the most difficult to cope with. Suex

I also have IBS. It does seem to go hand in hand with fibro. Recently I started eating plain rice cakes; a few a day and this seems to have made a little difference. I am finding that bread is not agreeing with me at the moment. It is always difficult to pin point the cause of it and it can be a trial and error journey; especially with food. I say try not to worry, but I know that's easier said than done.

Hope you feel a little better soon.

Yeah I have IBS x

Hi

Yes but thankfully not all the time mine flares up around the time of the month, if I eat certain foods, stress or certain medications can also trigger it off. I take Merbentyl and it has really helped.

I've managed to stop attacks with diet. For me dairy is a huge trigger. I've only got to have a little milk in my tea to set it off.

Caffiene speeds up my gut and is another trigger.

Replacing foods for me, has been the way to go.

Milk is not soya products and lacto free.

Its easy to go decaf

I have 80% chocolate

Oats and rice instead of wheat. Rice noodles are brilliant.

Yeasts are a trigger so I can't have mushrooms or quirk.

Nightshade drain my energy so I have sweet potato instead of the usual spud.

Meat is bulky. I'm better with fish.

I believe fibro ,for me, comes from leaky gut syndrome. If I look after my gut I get less pain.

Not that this is fool proof. I'm struggling with flu right now... My immune system is. Not doing so well...but then I do like to pretend I'm ok and do too much.

I haven't had a full IBS attack for 2 Years now though and don't miss them at all. The diet is worth it. We have sensitive guts....search for your triggers. Eat fresh veg and lots of omega 3. Stay away from sugar and chemicals. We can't tolerate them x

Read The Lectin Story. It does Google x

As you can see many of us have IBS many of us have different triggers ... It's a pain finding out which is your trigger but just try things slowly one thing at a time ... If you take out too many at once you may make yourself worse and that's the last thing you need

i have had what i now know as ibs for over 40 years. some episodes have been horrifying pain. have it somewhat under control thanks to a new medication for ibs plus take two different types of fiber and drink tons of liquids. know it sounds crazy but when my tummy is so swollen and in pain having a piece of cake or anything cake-y helps. yes i know that is not suppose to be the correct way to handle this but i told my gastro dr. who explained why it helps. just said not to get too carried away with it. it can't be pie or candy. has to be soft. don't care if little to no sugar so something like angel food cake works well. frankly wouldn't recommend it since know how counter-intuitive but for me i'd do anything to help. the two meds that worked have both been taken away. actiq-must have cancer to take this type of fentanyl and reglan which found has very serious dangerous side effects. there is a new form of reglan that works as well without the problems which is available in europe and canada but not in the us where i live.ps- had a couple naturalopaths claim my stomach issues are due to being on strong birth control pills(was on the first generation which were really strong) and/or the endomedrioisis i had. (know that isn't spelled correctly. sorry.)
