Hi i have been reading about people attending a pain clinic, what is this and do they do any good? Would it be worth asking my GP about it?

Pain clinics are usually divided into two sections .... One part deal with giving people regular pain injections ... I have my 3 monthly trigger point injections there a great help as I am allergic to so many meds..

The other part of the pain clinic some will do some injections but not as many or as regularly they try and work with OT and giving you ways to cope with your pain some may offer physio or hydrotherapy .. Or just give you gentle exercises to try ...

I was assesed and wasn't considered suitable for the the second option but the first option with the regular trigger point injections help me greatly ..

yes I think so. I attended a pain management clinic which teaches you how to manage your pain holistically taking mental and physical life into consideration it runs over the course of 12 months.

That was five years ago and now I am currently awaiting a pain clinic app due to deterioration of health and finally, actually getting a diagnosis after 15 years of docs, consultants (broad spectrum!!!) and hosps!

Because I couldn't pin point my fibro pain my pain clinic doctor liked at me and said "Well you will have to put up and shut up"

My husband had to grip my wheelchair and wheel me out before either him or myself hit him.

Hi

Not much of a thumbs up from me either, I just don't think they are geared up for fibro patients, if you have a particular pain, like a bad knee or neck then they can be very helpful, but all over pain or pain that constantly moves about seems to out fox them. I have tried several times and had several different treatments but never found them much cop, sorry.

Hi I have been 3 times over the years and didn't get any help the last time was 4 wks ago and was told there is nothing they can do for me . I will need to deal with the pain and he would write to my gp to tell him . I left in tears he said in 2005 you didn't have crutches or wheelchair so the meds you are on are not working . I felt worse after the appointment as I was having to justify everything . I agree they don't understand fibro . There should be clinics just for fibro me/cfs as in America . Xxx

If you don't get any help from a person at your pain clinic ... Please try what I did ... I went back to my GP told him what had happened ... My first appointment went ... Wear a better fitting bra ... With chronic chostochondritis ... Like that's going to happen ... And I was ushered out....

I told my GP ... He immediately got me an appointment with a different person... I took my OH as I was a bag of nerves after the first experience ... Saw a lovely man who said immediately oh yes you need trigger point injection in your neck and shoulders and I have been having them every 3 months or so since.... They give me great relief for 3 months ... If I have to wait longer I get worse again but on the whole they are wonderful ... So please don't give up ...if you have a good GP they will get you help it may take some time but they will get there...

Due to my wonderful GP, I got an appointment fairly quickly and as I've said before, expected it to be experts in pain management, with if not answers, at least effective pain relief.

But it just turned out to be a physiotherapist. At the first session I had a few exercises, which left me unable to move my arms, the next day. I also had some acupuncture, which did nothing at all. At the second session the physio abandoned exercises and just gave me a very painful acupuncture session, which left bruises on my hands, the next day.

If you read about other peoples experiences, with pain clinics, they all differ. I am sure that the staff of these places have nothing but good intentions but like the rest of the medical world, don't have a clue about constant, all-over pain, however it is labelled.

I am next due to see a psychologist, not because I'm nuts, but because My wife and I are determined to use every facility they offer me.

If however, she/he tells me, 'It's all in the mind', I may become violent. :)
