Can Fibro play havoc with your periods?

For the same length of time my osteopath has estimated i have had Fibro, my periods have also been very very irregular. Is this coincidence or connected?

I'm not sure Jennie , but coincidentally I went into early menopause about 2 years after I was first diagnosed with FMS and I was 46 then . I'd say my periods were irregular for probably 2 years previous to that as well, at around the same time I started seeking help for muscle and joint problems. .

I'm not sure there is any evidence to say either way, but I wouldn't be surprised TBH.

Do make doubly sure that other possible causes have been ruled out though - do not assume menstrual/reproductive issues are down to Fibro. Plenty of vitamin/mineral deficiences, thyroid conditions and autoimmune conditions can have symptoms that could be masked by Fibro and can affect your reproductive hormones.

hi i dont know the answer to that but it would never surprise me my periods have changed got shorter some months longer others not come at ll been light been heavy lol but again i am 47 this year so it could be my age too love to you diddle x

Hi all, I've been suffering with that lately. I'm 31 and to be fair have never really had normal periods, but they were okay enough that I could sort of plan when I was next due. However I keep getting hot flushes. Really really hot flushes. It's like I need every window and door open to cool down, but then I suffer when it's cold lol. It wasn't something I was gonna really ask on here but then seeing someone else had a similar question. Thanks all :) xxx

That really sounds like hypothyroidism, If you are "supposed to be within range" at the moment you may have subclinical hypothyroidism. These are not fibro symptoms, I'm sure because I've got the two. Keep a close eye in your thyroid - check it every year in case starts going down.

It wasn't until I read your blog that I had even considered the connection!

I hadn't had a period for nearly 2 years and was pleased to think that that phase was over then I left my husband and they have re-started albeit only every other month. I had just put it all down to stress but now you've got me thinking...

It seems i have got a lot of people thinking on this one. :-) Apparently there is no evidence to say it does but seems quite common in many Fibro sufferers.

I just thought about it since I always put the blame on my thyroid -hypothyroidism. But this's been sorted for over a year now. I am missing one everynow and again, at the moment I am wondering when it's going to be back - It seems with regulating my thyroid at the beginning was going all well but clearly something else is affecting it. I'm 36 so I very much doubt is premenopause.

I have now decided to check and found that even if there's no scientific proof many women with fibro have the same problem and started at the same time as their muscle and joint pain or fibro.

Goodbye to my dream to become regular - I'm sure there's a conexion. Many experts think that even if it hasn't been proved so far it may well be in the future. :-(
