Should I be taking aspirin?

GranolaLover892 profile image

Hi everyone, i have had one fresh transfer and one frozen both of which failed. We still have 4 frozen embryos and our consultant thinks we just need to keep trying and one will stick.

however for these first 2 transfers I have not been taking aspirin. He hasn’t recommended it but everyone else I read about seems to be taking it. Should I be pushing for aspirin for the next transfer?

Thanks for your reply! How many transfers have you had? Do you take it from the day of transfer until test day?

Hi lovely been doing ivf from 2013 but only started doing transfers on aspirin and blood thinners on my last transfer which was successful my baby 1 yr old now I’m getting ready to do another transfer in 2 weeks and been told to start aspirin in the next couple of days xxx

Aw what a long journey you’ve been on! Congratulations on your baby I hope your next transfer will be a success too. Did you get any tests done that indicated you should take the aspirin or did they just add it into your cycle? Sorry for so many questions! Just trying to work out if I need more testing or should just go ahead with it. Some clinics in other countries seem to add it as standard so I assume it can’t hurt

Thank you so much lovely. My clinic is in Cyprus so they add it as standard your right I had no test but when I seen my midwife wife at 12 weeks she told me to stay on it so it can not hurt if you won’t to add it to your cycle . It’s cool lovely you can ask as many questions as you like I love helping people if I can we all no what this infertility journeys like and how hard it can be so it’s good to help each other when we can xxxx

to be honest I wouldn’t recommend taking aspirin without speaking to your consultant. Aspirin is typically reserved for those who have recurrent miscarriages or a condition (like mine) that requires blood thinners during ivf.

Aspirin can actually cause problems with implantation if it isn’t indicated. Hope this helps xx

She should speak to her clinic yes your right but aspirin thins your blood the same as blood thinner so helps with blood flow to the uterus so I got told it helps implantation I did double transfer on aspirin they both implanted I lost one at 9 weeks but they both implanted but every one is different xx

I agree with Nenad that it’s best not to take it without discussion with your consultant and further testing. I have Antiphospholipid antibodies and prescribed clexane (and pred) during cycles but aspirin is only going to be added later following positive test as it can actually impact implantation as Nenad has mentioned. Also it doesn’t come without some element of risk in terms of bleeding and I had a friend with a subchorionic haematoma which they said was worse because she’d been on aspirin and the placenta nearly came fully away. So I wouldn’t take it just as OTC either xx

Thanks for all the advice. I will definitely speak with my consultant before taking anything just wanted to hear some opinions and why a lot of other people seemed to be taking it!

How did you get diagnosed with the Antiphospholipid antibodies please? I know we have only had 2 failed transfers but they were top grade embryos and we are being treated for MFI so I just really want to explore all areas in case we have a reason they’re not implanting and are wasting embryos by transferring without all the info

Endofitall profile image
Endofitall in reply toGranolaLover892

I’m so sorry you’re in this position - 2 failed transfers are still devastating.

Antiphospholipid syndrome is diagnosed with positive antibodies on two samples 12 weeks apart. My clinic did start treatment for it at the transfer I had in between these tests regardless and then second sample confirmed it.

How is your MFI being addressed? Has this been fully looked at bar just telling you to do ICSI?

Things I’ve had tested in terms of recurrent implantation failure: immune/clotting bloods including thyroid function and antibodies, endoTRIOME biopsy, hysteroscopy, tubal test, Digital endometrial function test (Professor Brosens team at Warwick University implantation clinic), also I’ve gone on to have endo exicision, MRI showing adenomyosis and tube dye tests but that’s only because my endo flared bad after rounds of IVF. Oh and we both had karyotypes checked.

My DH also has had sperm DNA fragmentation, and his bloods checked including for vitamin D, and a semen culture, even with his normal (excellent in fact) standard semen analysis, just so we covered all bases (and his DNA frag first time was surprisingly borderline given we’ve always been told he had super sperm). He now has to abstain for only 24 hours to get best result for our egg collection after we had review with clinical andrologist.

Hope that gives some ideas of avenues to explore. Xx

Thank you so much for all the info that is so helpful. That is a lot of testing you have had. Is you have that after a lot of failed transfers or did you want to try all the test first so you knew what you were working with?

The only tests there I’ve really had is my thyroid bloods and I’m taking Levothyroxine to bring my TSH levels down below 2.5. I am having an endo scratch before this transfer, there is mixed research on this but want to give it a go to try something new.

our MFI issue is anti sperm anti bodies so we were told they just stick to the sperm and stop fertilisation happening and ICSI would over come this which it did seem to as we had a good fertilisation rate and I was worried about or day 3-5 drop off but we had a good rate then too so were really pleased. Just really hope this next one sticks!!

You’re welcome. Should caveat all I’ve said with that you don’t necessarily need to do all. We did in stages. After 2 failed transfers under 35 with top quality blasts we did some basic bits but still had 2 good quality in freezer so went ahead with those. After those failed too we did a few more. And then when we had 5 AA/AB blasts fail we went the whole hog. I really hope you have a lot more luck than us. I do think a lot of my problem has been the endo but clinics keen to sell IVF vs sorting your actual diagnosis out.

That’s fair. Hope one of the next work 🤞🏼if not I’d really encourage you to get more male tests done too. We had 100% fertilisation and progression to blast and there was still a mild frag issue that could be improved. Xx

Totally understand if you don’t want to answer but what is your condition that would require blood thinners? I just feel like I don’t know whether I should be on them or not and the NHS don’t seem to want to test to see.

hello, very happy to share. I have the same condition as   Endofitall called Antiphospholipid Syndrome. In my experience, the test is only offered to women who have recurrent miscarriages and I was diagnosed in the same way as   Endofitall . When I tested positive for APS they advised me to take aspirin and Clexane (blood thinning injections) if I get pregnant again. This is why I would advise not taking aspirin until you speak to your doctor or do some further testing.

Also I don’t know how old you are but egg quality does decline with age and if the sperm parameters aren’t ideal then you would probably need to go through more untested embryos until a “normal” one sticks xx

Thank you for sharing. I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriages. Yes I did ask about the aspirin last time and he said was no need so I doubt he will want me to without further testing.

I’m 28 so everything they were telling us made us think it would work quickly. Hopefully we have just been unlucky so far and the next transfer will work. We are going to do a double transfer this time

And I know what you mean but you can be very hopeful about your next transfers with your age so stay positive. Only a matter of time xx

Hey lovely, yes definately i did take 75mg which is imperically used so no problem unless you have really some blood thinning problem.

I struggled a lot in my infertility journey do not know what really helped but now i have my healthy happy baby.

I wish you all the success in your journey

I wouldn't have aspirin if the doctor haven't told you...this is mostly for people that have clotting problems. I have 2 failed transfers too and in the 3 one the doctor told me to take probiotic yogurt drink and I am currently nearly 5 weeks pregnant.

I really think you should have a chat with the doctor before taking any drugs...x

I was prescribed aspirin and clexane after my miscarriage cycle 1. I was referred to the implantation clinic for further testing as I miscarried a euploid embryo but as I was on a 3 cycle plan and IVF is so expensive I asked my consultant what was safe that may be prescribed if I had the tests and there was an issue (as I wanted to be sure I had funds to support cycle 3 if needed). I was told aspirin, clexane and a steroid for natural killer cells. As they didn’t know if I had natural killer cells they wouldn’t recommend the steroid but aspirin and clexane were safe and prescribed for me. I’m now 30 weeks pregnant.

I took clexane till 12 weeks and aspirin 75mg till my 16 week appt and now on 150mg (recommended by NHS consultant) until 36 weeks as I’m 40 yrs of age x

Hi. I was in the same boat with more than two attempts and the consultant said we just needed to keep going. He agreed there was no evidence to support it but we could take aspirin along with the next transfer…it worked a treat and I now have a beautiful 12 month old. They kept me on the aspirin for the whole pregnancy xx

Hi, I had 4 failed transfers and then for my 5th transfer that worked I took 150mg of aspirin a day. I wasn’t told to - I just decided to try everything as it was my last embryo. There were other things at play though - I also took probiotics and changed the transfer timing to a day later following advice from the EMA, Alice and ERA test. So I’ve no idea if the aspirin helped but it obviously didn’t hurt. Then as soon as I met my midwife she told me I should be taking 150mg of aspirin anyway as it reduces the risk of preeclampsia. So currently nearly 36 weeks and I’ve taken it throughout my pregnancy. I think I started a week before my transfer. X

Hi lovely, may I ask what probiotics you took? If these were prescribed or if you can just buy over the counter xx

Hi, I was advised to buy a vaginal probiotic. I chose Canesflor which I got from Boots but I’ve heard it’s become unavailable recently x

Both Dr Regan and Dr quenby, leading specialists in recurrent miscarriages, recommended to take aspirin from bfp due to interference with implantation so perhaps best to speak to your consultant.

thanks so much for all the info everyone. Just to be clear i definitely won’t be taking anything without my consultant’s knowledge I was just wondering whether I should be pushing further for the aspirin or not. I think I will definitely ask about it again and push for it a bit but I will see what they say but follow their advice. I haven’t had any positive tests to this stage so I do want to try something different but it also does seem like a numbers game and just need to keep trying sometimes!
