Should I be on blood thinners following OHSS?

Hi all,

Thankfully was discharged from hospital yesterday after a four day stay with OHSS.

Whilst I was there, a nurse said we would need to continue with blood thinning medication until 12 weeks. However, the doctor discharging me, didn’t say this was necessary and just sent me home with compression socks.

I’ve read a couple of trust wide nhs documents online, which all say blood thinners for 12 weeks. I’ve queried this with the hospital, and they said they will find out today.

Does anyone has experience of this? If they say no, should I push back? I know severe OHSS is quite rare, so now I feel like I can anything can happen!!!!

Thank you all

Hi. PCOS is primarily an ovulation, hormone imbalance problem,, not a blood clotting one. I suppose though if you have suffered several missed missed or full b.lown miscarriages, then your specialist may suggest it. .I hope all works out well for yo. Diane.

I had Ovarian Hyper stimulation Syndrome, following IVF stimulation. Rather than PCOS. I actually got a call from the Hospital, as they reviewed my notes and confirmed I do need them. So headed back to collect 12 weeks worth. So just a heads up to anyone that does ever get it - yes you do need blood thinners!

Hi. Oh my goodness, OHSS is such a dreadful thing to happen, and I hope you’re fully over the effects. In hindsight a.ll our patients had some form of blood thinners for 16 weeks! Diane

Hi, I suffered for OHSS but not due to PCOS. Although I had horrible symptoms, I wasn't admitted into hospital. I was told to take blood thinners for 7 days and another set of injections which I can't recall the name of. I was also monitored with scans and blood tests to make sure my blood levels were stable. Such A horrible condition to experience, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Hi, I was in hospital for moderate/severe late onset OHSS and was started on blood thinners & TED stockings. I was told to continue the blood thinning injections (enoxaparin) once daily until I reach 12 weeks of pregnancy and then this would be reviewed by the antenatal team.

My OHSS set in a week before my official test date so at the time I was told if my period comes the symptoms and hormones would all settle and I wouldn’t need to continue with the medication, and that I would recover quickly from the OHSS, however if I was pregnant the symptoms would continue for a few more weeks and settle once the HCG stabilised.

So perhaps the outcome of IVF treatment determines the duration of the blood thinners.
