Blood thinners - any tips?

Hey lovelies,

I’ve been on blood thinners every day for a week now and they are not the most pleasant. I’m on dalteparin but it’s similar to clexane which is perhaps more common. This might sound like a silly thing to say but the needle is so sharp and it hurts going in (I’ve had quite a lot of experience injecting various things into my tummy so I can compare). Also my tummy is purple from the bruising. Any tips lovely people? I use Emla cream for my prontogest...perhaps worth a go? Anything to avoid the bruising? I inject really slowly which normally stops the bruising but not for these little beauties!

Thank you 🙏

Xx

The bruising is just cos it is a blood thinner and so many small vessels in that area, so if you hit one it probably will just bruise - think easy bruising is just a side effect I am afraid. Avoid rubbing the area after - and don’t expel that little air bubble, apparently that is there deliberately to try reduce bruising. Pinch an area of your abdomen - and just be confident when injecting, so it pierces the skin pretty quickly for you - not sure if that will help the pain from it. I actually found the Fyremadel more painful that Meriofert as well - Fyremadel is in a similar premade syringe with the same needle as Dalteparin - so maybe those needles are just a bit ... meaner. Dalteparin just stings after too - but it does ease rather quickly.

I hope it does ease for you! And that bruising settles/improves. Sorry I did not really have much useful advice - maybe someone else knows more 🤞🥰😇

Hi, I was on Tinzaparin before but started Dalteparin this time and I feel like they do sting more. I usually ice the area first then pinch the skin before my husband injects me. The icing is supposed to numb the area so it’s less painful x

I’ve been on Inhixa for previous transfers and they always bruise. I tend to grab the fleshy bit, ice that section for 15 seconds then inject (well the husband does it)... I find this makes the needle a bit less mean but these are kind of spring loaded so there’s no doing them slow! Xx

Hey Hifer, I found these the most painful of all! Someone suggested putting ice on the injection area first which helped me a little and I had slightly less bruising. I used to run the ice on after too. Xxx

Thanks hun. Might try the emla cream. Just can’t face ice at the mo as it’s so cold ! X

Hi Hifer, I’m on inhixa which is also a mean needle and also stings, bruises and is just not nice. I found them really difficult for a few weeks. I only worked this out yesterday but the air bubble needs to go in last. I had not been flicking it to the back. Also it’s easier and less painful going in if you really pinch the skin hard when injecting. Good luck, I feel your pain. X x

Hi , yes they are a bit stingy to say the least I am using dalteparin, strange really I hate using them but the last few days they not hurt as much, I have been grabbing the skin , about 1 inch thick , then relax the skin and injection, done it twice now , seems a lot less painful 😊😊😊Hope this helps you xx

Hi, so you pinch the skin tight, inject and then relax the skin and pull out the needle? X
