OHSS, how long after egg collection?

Hi, First round of IVF and had eggs collected yesterday. I have all the risk factors for OHSS, but we are mitigating as much as possible (gnrh agonist trigger, freezing eggs, Cabergoline, clexane and gnrh antagonist for the next few days). For those who have had OHSS, how long after the collection did you start to get symptoms? The only thing I have so far is some mild cramping, which I know can be normal.

My egg collection was on a Wednesday (28 retrieved) & they straight away said I couldn't have a fresh transfer due to OHSS risk. (There were only about 8 potentially mature follicles at the scan prior to collection day!)

Gradually felt better over the following days but then started feeling rough the following Tuesday (had done a fairly long walk the day before!). Was borderline mild OHSS, apparently my bloods were OK (not sure what they tested for but it didn't increase).

Prior to collection they changed my trigger & I think I had cabergoline & clexane (or similar) too. I think PCOS was my main risk factor but it was quite last minute they changed my meds!

It can vary from women to women the timing of the symptoms occurring and they may or may not increase Best keep in touch with clinic for advice- they may have an information sheet that would help reassure you Take it easy and drink plenty of fluids - if having any problems passing water or shortness of breath please contact your clinic

Take care of yourself

I was given a leaflet from my clinic following egg collection as I was at minor risk of OHSS. That basically said that it's rare to get it before transfer, although it can happen because of the HCG in the trigger shot. So it's unlikely to kick in yet.

Are you planning to have a fresh transfer? If so, the info they gave me said there's a small risk of developing either early or late OHSS following transfer. Early tends to start 2-4 days after transfer and late develops from around 10 days after transfer. It's my understanding that late OHSS only occurs if you get pregnant as it's triggered by the HCG released following implantation.

For me, they said they'd advise a freeze all cycle if the risk of OHSS was too high. They monitored my hormone levels and checked for any fluids during my transfer to assess whether they could go ahead safely. That made me feel much more at ease so might be worth checking all that with your clinic when working out what to do about transfer :)

Hey, I had OHSS and I felt alot of discomfort in the days following egg retrieval, my OHSS didn't allow me to do a fresh transfer and I still had 'symptoms' a few weeks later which delayed things, scan showed lots of fluid but I felt discomfort and bloating for about a week, just took it easy and drank lots of fluids to try flush the fluid out quicker! ❤️ Xx

Hi. I pretty much got moderate OHSS about 2 days after egg retrieval. My clinic stopped me from having a fresh transfer because of this and immediately stopped meds 4 days after EC. My period came about 11 days later, but the symptoms were present for about 3 weeks following egg collection. Like Janet said, everyone is different. Ask the best x

Hey Lovely, I developed mild/moderate OHSS about 4 days after egg collection. On day 5 of transfer day I told the team I was in so much discomfort and very bloated to go through with the transfer. My fresh transfer didn’t happen in the end as it turns out I also had a pedunculated fibroid that was approx 18cm that no scans could pick up only an MRI 😭. Shocked me to say the least but I’m pretty sure this massive thing caused me greater discomfort and heightened my OHSS symptoms. My FET failed when I had it so I’m now bracing myself for my 2nd round and my protocol doesn’t rule out a fresh transfer, it depends how my body reacts but I would prefer a fresh transfer. Maybe because I’m just impatient and I’ve tried FET before. All the best and Good luck hun x

I had mild OHSS. I was crazy bloated immediately after retrieval which subsided quite quickly but then returned maybe 5 days later. It slowly got better and then resolved completely when I got a bleed. (I had freeze all due to risk).
