FSH test results (FSH is as important as AMH?)

AMH is largely talked about on this forum but FSH is less so. I am super worried about my FSH lately.

In a recent test (October) my FSH came back high so that caused the clinic to demand updated day 2-3 FSH tests. I had to do that on day 1 (as day 2 would be Sunday and Monday I was busy).

I decided to get a private test done on day 3

NHS result (day1 october): 13.9

Private result (day 3 october) : 8.9

Now - (30Th Jan a day two test): 11.9

These results are really confusing. Anyway. I feel like FSH is an issue in that it is a marker of nearing menopause. I dunno. The limit at my NHS clinic is 8.9.

Any insights as always greatly appreciated :)

Hi Cuppppatea.FSH on Day 2-3 should be 2-10. Number needs to be under 10 to ensure you can be stimulated satisfactorily. Some c.onics will accept slightly higher. Your AMH tells you your ovarian reserve, how fertile you are. Ideal is 15 buff FSH is OK then better chance. Diane

FSH is more importante for IVF results than AMH. FSH is the natural hormone that stimulates the eggs and the stims meds are synthetic or natural FSH. The idea is that giving more FSH like hormones you produce more eggs. When your own FSH is already high your ovaries are already being highly stimulated so additional external meds stims FSH may not make you produce more eggs. A high FSH is more of a marker of getting closer to menopause than a low AMH. However on menopause FSH is over 30, so your is high but not that high. It’s also normal to oscillate. You can still try IVF, you’ll probably needs more meds and have fewer eggs per cycle but still may work. Pre IVF tests give you some prediction on how an IVF cycle will go but you can only really know trying. Hope that helps.

Ideally you would get them both done to get a fuller picture. I've been told AMH can vary though, so if you get a result that feels weird it could be worth retesting. No always cheap though. The other one that goes hand in hand with AMH is an antral follicle count (sorry if you already know this!)
