Is it all over before I even test?

Hello! I’m looking for some reassurance that my body isn’t completely against me and I’ve ruined our chances of a BFP before we’ve even made it to testing!

Long story short, I have suffered from migraines for most of my adult life. They have always been linked to my cycle and they were more frequent when I was on the pill. I usually take sumatriptan when I feel one starting and it eases the pain allowing me to carry on with the rest of my day. However, when I started my first FET, my clinic told me sumatriptan was not suitable for pregnancy and I should only take paracetamol and if really needed, dihidrocodeine if a migraine came on. I didn’t think this would be an issue as I don’t get them too often and I had planned on taking time off. However, fast forward to my first transfer and I had a migraine for days once I started my lubion injections. I was really ill and I feel like this was connected to the BFN we eventually got when I tested. I spoke to the clinic and they told me the migraines weren’t connected to the medication and the same protocol would be the best option for our next transfer.

I am now 4dp5dt from transfer no 2 and I have had a terrible migraine for over 24 hours. It is so bad that I have been vomiting all night, so much so that I have burst a blood vessel and there was blood in my vomit. I phoned 111 and the clinic and they both said it’s not connected and prescribed me anti nausea tablets but nothing for the pain other than paracetamol. The clinic also suggested I stopped taking the Lubion and take 3 cyclogest pessaries instead but I don’t think this will make a difference. I feel like I can’t continue like this and this is my body rejecting the transfer. I’ve asked this before, but has anyone else suffered from migraines directly after transfer and what did you do to relieve them? Also, has anyone else been really ill in general after a transfer and it still ended up in a BFP? I’m hoping someone can help. I’m at my wits end and just feel so hopeless. 😩 xx

Hi Dinobaby05, I've never suffered from migraines. I get a bit of a headache at the end of my period sometimes. However... on my last FET I had a migraine for 3 days after starting Lubion, and again for 3 days after coming off it. It wasn't horrendous as far as migraines go (I have friends who have been blighted for years so know it could be much worse), but it was bad pain concentrated above my right eye and I felt horrible. I'm surprised they are saying it isn't connected as I absolutely assumed it was the drugs. I'm so sorry it is affecting you so badly but I genuinely believe it won't affect what is going on inside in terms of success. You should compare yourself to the many pregnant people who end up in a similar situation with the vomiting. It doesn't affect their babies so why should it affect your embryo. Try not to be so hard on yourself and just concentrate on doing what you need to do to feel better now, or getting through it hour by hour if you can't. By this point I was so tired I wasn't doing much physically which helped. I drank lots of water, took some iron supplements and I put some deep heat cream on my neck. I'm not sure if any of it worked but as I say it did ease after a few days xx

Thanks WillowPark. It’s reassuring to hear someone else had issues with Lubion. The clinic just keep telling me it’s not a common side effect and basically get on with it! I’m 5dp5dt today and I do feel slightly better so hopefully that’s my body adjusting to it now. V scared to test but I know you’re right and lots of women have worse side effects and pull through. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. Xx

Perhaps there are lots of people like me who had symptoms but not to the extent you did. I had so many side effects I didn't report them to the clinic, and just hoped it would get better in a couple of days (and it generally did). I have just checked and headaches and vomiting are listed as a 1 in 10 side effect on the information leaflet for lubion, so that seems pretty common to me! Glad you are feeling a bit better today. Hopefully it all settles over the week x

I’m sorry Dinobaby05 that’s really rough to go through. I caught a norovirus like bug 6 days after transfer and was vomiting for 24 hours, couldn’t eat, could hardly drink. Also had some light spotting at the same time but at OTD got a BFP. I asked the doctor if the norovirus might disrupt the pregnancy and she said that your body does everything to protect a pregnancy. So I think the opposite to what you fear, even though you feel so poorly, it’s likely that your body is prioritising the pregnancy but unfortunately leaves you feeling so poorly. I hope the migraine eases, I can’t imagine how tough that it to deal with along with everything else in this process. Good luck 🤞 🍀🍀

Thanks kitkat10. I haven’t thought about it like that before. I think I was just panicking because I felt like this during my last transfer and it ended up being a BFN. I do feel better today. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Xx

I’m so sorry that sounds horrible and I would say it probably is connected in some way to the meds so it’s unusual they say now.

I had a fever the evening of my transfer and felt absolutely awful and was terrified that that was going to stop it working but I’m now 21 weeks so it did! In some ways I feel like it may have been my body getting used to this new object embedding. So I’m keeping everything crossed for you.

lubion causes migraines in some people but it’s not related to ‘rejecting’ the embryo it’s just a side effect of the hormones no matter what the outcome of the transfer is so please don’t worry about that! Must be horrible having them when you can’t take anything I’ve been the same before and they did last into pregnancy for a while too but the sickness from that took over what was worse and the anti sickness meds do help so good you have those early. Good luck xx

Ooof this sounds so awful and hard!! I didn’t have migraines but I did have a terrible reaction to Lublion and had to switch back to pessaries. It wasn’t my successful cycle, but my successful one I was on cyclogest and I had a very bad and Covid like virus and a bad allergic reaction to something unknown. I was really poorly for 10 days, then I had some bleeding - was still positive! I’d definitely say don’t count yourself out and maybe switch from the lubion. Also the hormones involved in pregnancy and before the period are so similar so you are likely to have similar symptoms! I guess that could include your migraines. I hope you feel better soon.

Xxx
