2nd miscarriage/progesterone

Sorry for the long post…

Yesterday I had a miscarriage after an IVF fresh transfer. (They said it was a top graded embryo, I used donor sperm). When I went to the EPU they confirmed that there was no pregnancy sac.. which I was expecting with the amount of blood etc.

I was 11+6.. I had a scan at 7+2 and the baby measured 6+6. This was the last scan I had.. the clinic told me to stop progesterone supplements at 8 weeks even though I asked if I needed to be on them longer due to a previous chemical miscarriage after IUI procedure in May 22. (I was not on progesterone with this pregnancy).

I’m wondering if the embryo stopped developing a few weeks ago since I stopped taking the progesterone and then the miscarriage process has started naturally? (Is this classed as a missed miscarriage and may have been picked up if my 12 week scan was sooner.. it wasn’t booked until 13+2)

Anyway the point of my post.. I’ll be booked in for my follow up appointment at my IVF clinic soon as I’ve still luckily got 5 frozen embryos to use via FET.. should I be asking for anything extra if I get a BFP?

Maybe progesterone longer that 8 weeks? Seems my pregnancy lasted longer than my first and could this be the reason?

Is there anything else I need to be asking my Dr for at the review meeting?

Thank you for reading.

Hi Kt8e/ I am so sorry to hear of the tragic loss of your little one, and hope you have plenty of support just now. I am hoping that as you lost this little one, perhaps they will monitor your progesterone levels to ensure you are getting enough. I must admit that I used to prefer scans being done at 13/40wks as you would be certain of seeing everything required for the nuchal scan too. I wish you every good luck with your next embryo transfer, and let's hope this will be your year. Diane

Thank you. I will mention testing progesterone when I have the meeting and see if this is something they can do.

I'm so sorry for your loss. there are no words.

I had three MC and on my last cycle I had been tested for NK cells (which were high) so I was on meds for that, progestrone injections (previously had pesseries) and blood thinners. took all until 12 weeks

Thank you. How do they test for Nk cells?

I went to Coventry as part of Tommy trust charity. It cost approx £500 for the biopsy. from the research I did I wanted the biopsy of the area rather than bloods and there aren't many places that do that x

so sorry for your loss, it truly is so heartbreaking and i hope you are managing ok.

If it helps, I’m recurrent loss and had been referred to the recurrent loss clinic in London. Even though my progesterone levels were fine pre-FET and clinic let me choose to be on them or not (until 12 weeks), the recurrent loss clinic advised staying on them until 16 weeks. I’m now 22 weeks - could be related or not! Either way, I think medical advice for anyone with multiple loss is to be on progesterone due to recent studies. Hope this helps xx

Thank you.. you think that all clinics would give same recommendations as the recurrent clinic? But maybe cos I only had 1 previous they wouldn’t suggest it? I’m definitely going to bring it up on my review meeting.

yah i think it’s industry advice now, it’s why clinics will let you do progesterone on natural FET if you’re concerned
