Has anyone used antibiotics for FET?

I've just had my follow up consultation following my BFN on my FET. This time round the doctor is recommending viagra (thin lining related) and to take antibiotics just in case there is any kind of bacteria in the uterus. I've not had a biopsy because our clinic doesn't recommend this but they have suggested these antibiotics as there aren't any known risks and some women have had success.

Has anyone used antibiotics and do you think it's made any difference? I'm happy to try anything but I was just curious as I'd not heard of this before. I'll be rattling around soon!!🤪

Many thanks 😊

Hi, yes I had a short (think it was 3 day) dose of antibiotics before my FET, my clinic do it as standard practice. I did get my BFP so who knows if it worked or not but it certainly didn't hurt!! Good luck x

Thank you and congratulations!

It's so weird, I don't know why they don't just give everything to everyone at the start!Xx

My husband had to take that before the semen collection to reduce any bacteria so I guess it helps?

Hi, sorry to hear it was negative. I thought your official test date was tomorrow. You had a quick consultation follow up. Mine is next week as couldn’t get in before that. We have had doxycycline before on one cycle but it wasn’t a cycle I had a positive on. How many have you got to take and did they say to add probiotics after to replenish the good bacteria/microbiome?

Did they agree to a short protocol or are you on long? Good news re the viagra - are you taking orally or vaginally this time? Xx

My OTD is tomorrow but I tested again this morning. I couldn't feel less pregnant 😂.

I managed to get a late appointment when I called yesterday so someone must have cancelled. I'm doing the long protocol with norethisterone again otherwise I couldn't try the antibiotics so I thought it was worth a try! I'm using the viagra vaginally but I'm wondering if they are the same as I had last time or whether the pills come in a different form.

I hope your next consultation goes ok, are you hoping to make any changes? x

Hi,

I am getting a bit worried about doing the back to back short protocol as I'm essentially having a 5 day break after my withdrawal bleed and starting the oestrogen and viagra again. Did the consultant you spoke to have any concerns when you asked about doing the short protocol? Which doctor did you see? I'm seeing Dr Jeffreys tomorrow. I would usually have the northisterone break but I don't think I grokked how back to back it would be straight from the withdrawal bleed and I wondering if I should have had a natural period as well....

I had my baseline scan yesterday and all was fine so on oestrogen and viagra again. The only thing I want to ask to change is add in the patches as well to try to get a thicker lining. I toyed with Doxycycline but I had it a few months ago and I don't have time on a short.

The viagra comes in the same form, it just says vaginally instead of orally. How much Doxy did they prescribe you? x

hi! I’m currently on antibiotics too as my clinic made me do the era, emma, alice tests which revealed bacteria in my uterus and is likely linked to my last two chemical pregnancies.

From what I understand there are no issues taking the antibiotics before your FET!

18 months ago my Emma & Alice showed bacteria so i needed 2 courses of antibiotics & then vaginal probiotics to restore balance. i then didn't make it to transfer due to thin lining issues until now, and so i requested a course of the same antibiotics again last month (metronidazol) as wanted to be 100% sure i didn't have the same issue crop up again and then I did vaginal probiotics again. Finally got my Bfp x

thank you for getting back to me and congratulations on your BfP!

I've not heard of vaginal probiotics before, are these prescribed by the clinic? Are they pessaries and how long do you take them for?

Thanks xx

Yes they are called cannesflor - you can get them in the chemist /from amazon - are little pessaries that you do for a week and then one a week for 4 weeks. My clinic recommended them. I also used oral intimate probiotics as well through the FET to ensure it didn't get out of whack...

I only had one embryo and with ovarian failure can't make any more so i wanted to make sure i'd ticked everything off! I strongly believe in using antibiotics & probiotics before the transfer... x

thanks for this advice, it's so helpful!

So I take the antibiotics for a week, followed by a week of the probiotics and then one once a week? Do you take them once you have had the transfer? xx

pinky30 profile image
pinky30 in reply toPebbles345

yes - i was prescribed them for a week and then after do a week of the cannesflor, and then once a week for a month - i did also then do one at the beginning of my FeT as a top up once i'd started meds...

However. for my Emma and Alice i actually ended up needing 2 different types of antibiotics to clear what they saw so i would be very tempted if it were me to do a biopsy first to be sure the type that will benefit you x

Also, for thin lining, i was put on a combo of estrogen patches, and vaginal estrogen in addition or oral estrogen & took vit e & vvit c along with my prenatal - this seemed to do the job to thicken things up eventually.

It's controversial but I also found that regular sex helped (maybe because of increased blood flow!? 🤷‍♀️) 🙈

regular sex sounds much more fun than patches and viagra!! 😂.

I've always had a thin lining and feel like I've really tried everything but I do have a little boy from a previous FET so I just need to get it to 7mm 🤞🏻. I might ask about vaginal estrogen though, thank you!! xx

If it’s doxycycline, be prepared for the worst heartburn of your life! My former clinic put me on a ten day course and it was brutal! I was eating Rennies like sweets 😆
