AMH levels for age 42

Hi,

I recently had a chemical pregnancy as a result of my last FET which was our last remaining embryo left. This was a result of a cycle back in 201 7 when I was 37.my AMH level at that time was 15.5

we have a 3 and a half year old son from this cycle and really wanted to give him a sibling. I'm very nervous as I'm 42 now, and decided to get AMH levels tested and see from there. I have a consultation tomorrow about results with my doctor,but I am wondering if this is a good result or not?if anyone knows much about AMH levels? I want to prepare myself I guess ahead of tomorrow and I know this community is ways so supportive and helpful.

An AMH of 15 at 37 was good, and is generally a reflection of what your egg reserve looks like.

The one thing I would flag is AMH is only that - a view of your number of eggs - and not a reflection of quality. I know some people who have had a rock bottom AMH but got pregnant because their egg quality was good. I know some people who had a really good AMH for their age (myself included) but the reality was whilst I had loads of eggs they weren't very good quality and wouldn't have produced a successful pregnancy.

I guess what I am saying is take it as a guide, but its not the be all and end all

Hi daisy thank you so much for your reply. Yes you're right I know there is no test to show the quality of eggs and my doc had previously said before my amh results that at my age 60-70% could be of bad quality. But I am thinking that if my amh level is good, then I may produce more eggs which might give me a better chance of having perhaps even one egg of better quality. I know its so difficult. I suppose I'm looking at a glimmer of hope maybe, I know that if my results were low I probably would not even contemplate trying again, this now makes my mind a bit undecided. Thanks so much for replying. It's so good to get others views and thoughts. My mind can go crazy and overthink everything when feeling in limbo x

Hi Diane, thank you so much for that. My amg level was 15.5 at age 37 and had them tested again last week and I'm now aged 42 and got a result of 18.70..I didn't think it could go up? And was waiting for a big drop off in results especially now I am 5 years older. It's all so confusing....at my age I really thought results would be bad and my mind would be made up not to try again,well maje the decision a bit easier I guess(even though I really really want a sibling for my son).

Thanks Diane. I have an appointment with doctor tomorrow about results, I'm not getting hopes up as I know egg quality could be a problem, but I suppose at least amh is one less thing to worry about x

I had non existent AMH at 40 and I didn't even bother measuring it afterwards. I did manage to get a sibling at 42 without IVF, as I never made more than 1 egg per cycle regardless of stims. It's definitely possible to pull it off for us older low AMHers but it does require more cycles to hit a good egg. My doctor said only 1 out of every 12 eggs is viable at 42. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. Wow that amazing! Congratulations. We're dealing with male infertility factor our chance of conceiving naturally is non existent so IVF is our only hope. We have 10-11% chance of a live birth at my age doc said so I suppose it's better than 0%

In that case, I would recommend mild/natural IVF with multiple cycles and banking embryos. Milder stims are better for quality I feel, especially if you end up being a poor responder. They gave me 1% chance, so you never know.

I am 42 with a child similar age to you - I did have my amh level checked but can't remember the number.

I got pregnant waiting for our FET - still very early days, only 9 weeks....

I am still unclear of success rates relating to age and AMH.

But in my opinion, I do not think this is a numbers game, I think luck is also a big factor.....especially at this age....

We didn't do very well having IVF when I was 37....

My AMH from age 36 to age 40 actually went up! Well obviously it didn’t go up as that’s impossible but as testing has improved it’s picked up more so essentially it means my AMH hasn’t changed much in those 4 years. I was really worried like you but it isn’t the be all and end all anyway but helpful to know for protocols etc. xx

My AMH was the same...going up! Yes the doc said it was good for her to plan protocol. X

I was given a graph of amh levels with my results and for age 42 it says typical normal levels range from 35 pmol/L to zero.
