AMH wobbles ....

I've seen a few posts about this, so sorry to repeat.

Just returned from clinic with my OH. He has Azoospermia so just ruled out he doesn't have chromosomal abnormalities, which was a relief and now on the path towards ICSI.

One thing I wasn't expecting was a slightly lower AMH level than average. I'm 34 years old and was advised ideally 20-25pmol/L was about right but mine was 14 pmol/L. Doctor didn't seem to think it was an issue and even said it was in the average range but I'm definitely nattering about time and of course have turned to Dr Google and found it is actually a low reserve.

I just wondered if AMH is something that fluctuates or if measured levels are affected by stress on the day of testing? On the day of the blood test it took the phlebotomist for attempts to get blood from me as I have really small veins and it does get me stressed out.

Any thoughts or similar experiences would be good to hear about.

AMH does fluctuate a bit, just not loads. Although it’s on the low side for your age, it’s still a great number for IVF and you also have age on your side for egg quality. Xx

Hi, mine was 16 when I was 30 and I was told it was in the average range. I like you went on Google and stressed out haha. It wasn't needed and purple doggy says it about quality and your age is good for that. I got 12 eggs, 10 mature. 4 blasts (we did half icsi half ivf) an currently have a 3 month old son. I wouldn't worry about your amh, the clinic isn't. X

Hi there! When I was 30 mine was 16.1 and when I was 36 it went down to 11 but the nurse just said that all it means is she will start me off on a high dosage of drugs this time. Try not to worry about this, I know it’s hard. X

A good way to think about it is AMH can be useful for drs to work out good drug protocol for you it’s just one factor in a whole bunch of things. It’s good to see it in combination with AFC . My AMH was 0.8 at the same age and they said they didn’t know if i would respond well to drugs but 5 eggs were collected and I did go onto have a baby from that round . Good luck

Mine was under 9 when I was 30, so on the low side. What it meant is that I wasn’t expecting many eggs. With two cycles, I got 7 & 8 eggs, with 100 percent fertilisation rate both times. I lost one egg in each cycle that didn’t make it to blastocysts. Two of the eggs from my second cycle are now my baby twins.

It’s quality over quantity that you want so please try not to worry 💛

At 32 mine was 11 and now at 35 it’s 9 and I’m pregnant with my second IVF baby. I had no trouble getting enough eggs and my husband also had severe sperm issues. I wouldn’t be worried about that number at all xx

I was 39 when my amh was taken and it was 10.6 pmol/l. I am presently 32 weeks pregnant. Stay positive Xx

Agree with comments that AMH isn't everything and is just one factor - mine was very high so the doctors were worried about over responding, masses of eggs and OHSS, and they put me on the lowest dose of meds possible on long protocol. My body ignored the meds... Then they tried lowest dose on short protocol - same thing. Had to go to max meds and I finally, finally, got 9 eggs but poor fertilization, then only 5 on the next round but all fertilized. Clinic and I were disappointed with numbers, and clinic didn't understand my response and advised me to cancel several times. But I had a baby from the second round eggs. So AMH really doesn't seem to be the definitive factor, whether it's high or low, and seems fewer eggs can mean better quality.

Hello, I too have AMH on the lower side at 11.8 (age 33). My first test came out at 8 and second 11.8 so I think it can fluctuate.

My OH also has azoospermia (NOA) and I am currently 6 weeks pregnant using donor sperm. I didn’t get a lot of eggs but the fertilisation rate was pretty good. I have 5 collected, 4 were fertilised and I ended up with 3 embryos. One was transferred straight away and then only one was good enough for freezing.

I know everyone says it but I wouldn’t worry too much about AMH, especially if your consultant isn’t concerned. It’s quality not quantity! Good luck xx

Hi at 39 mine was 3.4pmol we weren’t offered ivf but instead was told to just keep ttc naturally for me that was the end of the road we had already had 3 mmc so for me the likelihood having a good strong egg with very limited eggs left was little to none. Some kind of magic happened I got pregnant again at 40 and we now have a 1 year old. Good luck 🤞🏼

I'm 36 and mine is now 3.3 (was 12.4 when it was last measured 4 years ago). We've just started a fresh cycle of ICSI (I'm on day 3 of down regulation injections) but our consultant has told us we only have around 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 chance of success (compared with 1 in 3 normally). I've been feeling pretty discouraged about it, but trying to remember that it's about quality not quantity.

We did have a successful pregnancy through ICSI on a previous round when my AMH was 12.4 which is lower than yours is now, so hopefully that offers some encouragement!

just wanted to say, it does matter if its 1 in 5 or 1 in 1000, the way I see it, its 50/50, your either the lucky 1 or your not, and out of all the bfps on your otd, there is no reason why this can't be you!

Thanks Holly - I think you're absolutely right. Even with fantastic odds there's no guarantee. So much of this journey is riding the rollercoaster and seeing how things play out. x

it's exactly that. Easy to say when there is so much aniexty floating around, but you can only do things to look after your wellbeing, you can't alter whatever the results will be. So you just keep in mind that sad thoughts serve no purpose when its over something that could very well never happen, so keep that thought of this working at the forefront of your mind ❤️

At 31 I had an amh of 12.2. I had 24 follicles on the scan, 16 collected, 9 mature and only 3 fertilised, but all 3 made it do day 5. I had a chemical from the first, baby boy from the 2nd and our 3rd is cooking. They will alter your meds to suit your results and do what they can to help you. It doesn't matter what quantity you get, remember... it only takes one xxx ❤️
