Cold and Severe Cough in Early Pregnancy

Hi guys, so we are very happy, albeit still very cautious, that last week after our 4th IVF cycle we got a BFP and 4 days later the HCG was multiplying appropriately. We have a scan scheduled for this Friday, hoping and praying everything is ok and continues to progress.

However, my wife has caught a horrible cold and has had a severe cough for over 5 days now. Severe enough to the point she hasn’t been able to sleep for 5 nights now because of the cough attacks (confirmed it not covid). Our doctors say that a cough won’t affect the pregnancy but we are terrified. My wife feels like she is contracting her torso so much with the cough that she thinks it may cause a miscarriage. Has anyone here had experience with a bad cold or cough during any previous pregnancy?

Im in the TWW and started getting a cold and been coughing the last few days and badly last night (Also not COVID), everything I have read says it won't - I'm paranoid about whether it will effect implantation. Sorry I can't be more positive but I'm here with you! I guess colds are common in pregnancy?!

Hi, perhaps I can be helpful to you in this case: she started with these symptoms about 5 or 6 days after our transfer and we were scared like you that it would affect implantation, but we did get a positive. I hope that helps you put your mind a little at ease about that part. Good luck to you!

Hiya, congrats on your BFP!So many women have severe sickness throughout their pregnancies and don't miscarry - the torso contractions would be about the same with a cough, so I would say don't worry!

Just ask her to drink lots of fluids and rest up.

x

Hi GBB. Oh dear poor thing.Try giving her some hot honey and lemon drink to sip at and egular parcetamol for any pain. No anti-inflammatores such as ibuprofen. An inhalation of steam over a bowl of hot water with a towel over her head and some "Vick" might help to moisten her throat. Leave a bowl of water by the radiator in your bedroom too to help moisten the air. Hope she soon settles and good luck for that magic first scan. Diane

Hi. I had HG from about week 6 to week 20 and the vomiting and retching was that bad that I’d pull muscles in my stomach and back. I’m now 35 weeks pregnant. So I’m sure she’ll be fine. The female body is an amazing thing. All the best to you both x
