Period pains in early pregnancy

I hope its ok to post this here.I've been lucky enough to concieve naturally after another failed attempts at ivf. Of course we are shocked and over the moon. Its only been 4 weeks since my last period so this is so early but I've had bloods done that are positive.

I had a misscaraige with my last pregnancy that was ivf. I'm very worried about having another. The problem is now I have period like pains in my lower back. I've had them ever since my missed period. Its not severe but it is continues more or less. My sister did say she had this with both her boys that were fine.

I have sore boobs and already sickness. But these cramps don't seem to be going anywhere.

Any experience or advise.

Thankyou xxxx

It’s quite common to get some cramping so try not to worry too much right now. If the pain continues and gets worse it’s worth calling your local EPU. Unfortunately they can’t really scan you until about 6 weeks as there is nothing to see. You could see if your gp will measure your HCG; ideally it’s measured twice 2-3d apart. You can also have it measured privately or a home test like medichecks. Sickness and no bleeding are good signs though 😊 (bleeding also doesn’t have to be bad-I bled for nearly 4 weeks this time around but at 10w all is ok atm). Xx

Thankyou, yes I asked GP and he said no seen you in 12 weeks! I didn't realize there are some at home medichecks I will look into that thanks.Congratulations on your pregnancy! Thats amazing news :) xxx

Congratulations! Such a lovely surprise, but i know how worrying it is. I had a natural pregnancy out of the blue after failed IVF too, and in those early weeks I had LOTS of period-like cramping. So try not to worry. I second the advice above, about getting a test with medichecks to give you some reassurance xx

Thankyou for this and congratulations! Xx

it’s a normal early pregnancy symptom.

I'm currently 7 days late but still BFN on home tests. I had cramps the day it was due & again yesterday. I know I ovulated from the side with no tube & due to start my final & 7th IVF cycle next month. The chance Im naturally pregnant is low but .... its currently Sunday here so wont be able to get a blood test till tomorrow. My partner is currently overseas for 3 weeks so really bad timing if I am.

not to worry I had this period like cramps and it continued till 5 month of pregnancy (it’s calms down once I drink water), from 6th week I used to get stabbing kind of pain in right side of uterus and this also continued till late pregnancy. I also had full flow bleeding (more than period) at 5th week and everything turned out fine now I have 3month old in my hand. Stay hydrated and stay positive.

Congratulations! Xx

cramps are actually really common in early pregnancy and is one of the signs and I wished they published this information, because like you, when it happened I was concerned too. As long as they’re fairly mild, then it’s actually just one of those symptoms but should go after a few weeks. If you’re worried you can drop into your local epu but they won’t be able to see much until 6 weeks has passed.. but at 5 weeks they hopefully might see an egg sac.

Thanks for this. Yes its definitely a worrying symptom. I may visit the EPU in about 2 weeks and see if they can see anything, but I know its so early. Xx

only worrying if you’re not sure what you’re looking for. Believe me, cramps are actually what you look for along with the other symptoms when you’re paranoid and doing ivf for the umpteenth time. Good luck!

Hi there,

I had period pains around that time and took it as a positive sign of implantation. I am now 9 weeks with twins!

Trust, you're doing great.
