Failed first fresh cycle, frozen embryo transfer next. I was wanting to know more about people’s experiences and moving forward

Hello I was wondering if anyone could share their experience to help me understand and prepare for the next steps.

I had my fresh first ivf cycle which was unsuccessful. I found this out last week. In my fresh cycle I had 8 eggs collected, (they only collected from one side due to poor response on the other side) 7 of which made it to day 5 blastocysts. I had one transferred and 6 frozen. I am awaiting my follow up appointment next week. Has anyone got suggestions for questions to ask at this appointment? I want to know what caused this fresh cycle to fail ( I know I might not get the answers)! What could be done differently this time? I do have endometriosis.

What is the process for frozen embryo transfer, meds/timescales? How long did people have to wait between fresh and frozen transfers?

Thanks

Hi sjg, sorry the fresh didn't work! You have a great amount frozen! My fresh didn't work last year if I remember correctly I had the bleed from the failed cycle them the next bleed I started the meds for the frozen so took about roughly 6 weeks. The frozen was much simpler as no injections etc and less scans. My first fet worked but unfortunately early miscarriage at 7 weeks. I have my next fet transfer today after taking some time out.

Good luck with everything, unfortunately after the fresh didn't work my consultant didn't really say why or change anything it was a case of let's try again with frozen. X

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply . I’m sorry your two attempts have been tough and I wish you all the luck in the world that it is positive after your transfer today ❤️. Did you have to take any medication at all for the frozen transfer, if so what was it and how long for? I’m worried about taking estrogen if needed as this is linked with endometriosis. X

My frozen medication is estrogen tablets throughout starting from day 1 of period then progesterone from 5 days before transfer. Oh no! Hopefully they will take this into account with your cycle? I find the frozen transfers much easier to deal with than the fresh. Thank you! Here's hoping! I'm sooo ready to move forward haha. X

Forgot to mention that they did offer me to do a natural fet no medication which follows when you ovulate. Which in trying if this doesn't work but with your endo perhaps this might be worth asking about.

Hi SJG. I was in a very similar situation to you. Had a BFN on a fresh cycle and just had the second frozen transfer. We ended up with 5 blastos in total and were told they were all grade A quality hence my surprise with a BFN. I asked at the follow up but he reassured me that there is no reason why any further attempts should fail. I too have bad endometriosis so worry that this will hinder my chances. I had to wait for a second bleed after a BFN to start again and feel the frozen cycle has been so much easier for my body. I was frustrated at waiting between cycles but feel this gap has also helped my body recover. My advice would be to ask as many questions as you want at the follow up as that gave me a lot of reassurance. Good luck x

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply . I’m sorry your first fresh cycle did not work, it’s heartbreaking isn’t it as I very much got my hopes up with having a good quality embryo like you. The nurse said 3 cycles but I don’t know if that means I can start on my third or not. I know what you mean about waiting, I kind of want to get on with it. Did you have to take any medication at all for the frozen transfer, if so what was it and how long for? I’m worried about taking estrogen if needed as this is linked with endometriosis.

Did IVF cause any difficulties/pain with your endo? X
