2nd miscarriage

I was 33 when had fresh ivf transfer last year. Resulted in twins mmc 5.5 weeks. Recent FET bfp strong positives. Went for first scan on Wednesday - sac measuring as it should but no fetal pole - likely to be a blighted ovum. Sonographer didn’t seem hopeful. I’m going for another scan on Wednesday. I didn’t think blighted ovum was possible in IVF and I’m trying to get my head around it.

Has anyone had anything similar? Did you have tests before your next FET? I’m concerned the embryos may be abnormal even though they were Grade As so on paper look good. I also don’t have any lining issues.

Feeling very low and just sad it’s happening all over again.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. It's awful. I have had a MMC but I didn't have any tests. I'd push for some possible answers by your clinic or look into testing your other embryos? Ive heard lots on this forum about progesterone levels, thyroid and MTHFR gene as potential MC causes but I'm no medic. Just might be worth asking some qs? Wishing you all the best and I hope your next scan brings you positive news. Xxx

Thanks for your reply and sorry to hear about your loss too. I had my thyroid checked by GP and apparently that was normal - I never asked for the exact level. Progesterone on transfer day was 69.2 and was on lubion injections as well as pessaries. I was also on lose dose aspirin but not had a full blood clot check/immune issues so will ask for those. My clinic don’t do testing of embryos- they have a sister clinic that does but it would cost thousands so might as well pay for a whole new round by that point. Xx

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's heartbreaking and I hope that you have a lot of support and love around you during this terrible time. I second lovemylion, ask questions and perhaps push to get referred to a recurrent miscarriage specialist for tests? My SIL had two miscarriages in a row and insisted on a referral to a specialist. Her specialist did a lot of tests and worked out a special diet and some blood thinner for her. She fell pregnant with her daughter straight away and is now pregnant again with twins. No more miscarriage.

I also had three 5AA embryos transferred that failed to work (1 chemical and two BFN). The most likely explanation is that they were chromosomally abnormal. I fully plan to embryo bank next time I'm doing IVF and get all the embryos tested to hopefully limit the number of times I go through the heartbreak of transfers with BFNs. But that is my personal choice.

I really hope that you get your answers and your rainbow baby. This journey just sucks and it keeps kicking you. Biggest hugs. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Xx

Lots of support thank you. I will also have some counselling this time. I’m intrigued by the special diet - didn’t realise this could have an impact on miscarriage. Sorry to hear about your cycles. I would potentially have embryos tested next cycle if I have a fresh cycle again. I guess I have to test for everything else first and just hope one of my frozen does stick eventually. Such a rollercoaster isn’t it 😞 xx

My SIL specialist diet was to avoid foods that seem to be allergens within her family...and it worked. She has an incredibly restrictive diet during pregnancy to avoid dairy/gluten/some fruits/fish. But she started the diet and now both times...she has fallen pregnant easily and had the easiest pregnancies instead of the constant early chemicals and two 8 week miscarriages. I am determined that if something happens to my current bun in the oven that I'll be requesting a referral to a recurrent miscarriage specialist as I think they know a lot more about it than FS do. Good luck and I'm so sorry you're going through this. The journey is so disheartening. 😔😔😔

Hi DG2022

I’m sorry to hear of your situation, I’m going through exactly the same thing at the moment. I had a mmc at my 12 week scan last year where my baby had died at 8 weeks and then had a blighted ovum last month after my 1st FET. We have decided to try again with the final frozen embryo we have as it’s there ready to go. If unfortunately it does result in another miscarriage then we will have further investigation done before another full cycle is done. I’m also worried about abnormal embryos as like you ours are graded high on paper.

I have had a blood test done to check for clotting issues which I am waiting on the results for before I do my FET however they have said it’s likely to come back ok but nothing to lose by checking.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will be 3rd time lucky for us both! xx

I’m so sorry for your losses 😞 did you have medical management or d&c? It’s so cruel as I wasn’t having symptoms but this weekend I’ve felt so sick but if it wasn’t for the early scan I would think everything was okay 😞 can I ask how much you paid for blood tests? My clinic seems quite expensive - £600 or something! I always come back “normal” on tests and it’s “just one of those things” 😭. We have unexplained infertility so nothing is actually wrong with us apparently! 🙄 Good luck for your next FET - please update if it works out. Be so nice to hear a happy outcome xx

Thank you..... I left them both to complete naturally, they both started within a few days of me stopping progesterone support. Yes MMC seem extra cruel don’t they as you have no idea there’s anything wrong until you are scanned. I just had 1 test for now so it was £100. To have the full lot was a few hundred pounds like you have said which I understand can be frustrating if everything just comes back ok.

I will definitely update you if I can, please do the same as like you say would be nice to hear if it’s successful. Good luck with everything xx

I stopped my meds already even though I was told to continue them. I am hoping it will start naturally. I’ve started larger spotting so fingers crossed. I’ve got hospital appointment booked for Sunday for medical management just in case it doesn’t happen naturally. I feel so fed up with it all but don’t feel ready to give up yet. I’ll make a note of your username. Let’s hope by Christmas we have happy news to share 😊🤞 xx

It sounds like it may happen naturally then. I much preferred it this way so I hope it does for you. I totally understand how you feel but definitely don’t give up yet, it only takes one normal embryo & that may be your next FET. Fingers crossed you are right 🤞🏻🍀xx
