First Day 9 Scan

I really didn’t know what to expect today in terms of “results” and now I have them I’m not sure what to make of them!

So I have 5 follicles at a good enough size (I cant remember the exact sizes) and 4 that are are small. The nurse said the smaller ones probably won’t grow now. The lining of my womb was apparently nice and thick.

The nurse told me I’d get a call in the afternoon to tell me if my egg collection would be Day 11 or 13 after the consultant and embryologist have been through the results. I got a call back as promised by the nurse and told egg collection has been booked for Saturday which will be day 11.

The nurse I normally deal with was on day off so it was one that I haven’t met before. She wasn’t very forthcoming with info or explanations until I asked. I wanted to know if 5 follicles was a good for my particular case, when egg collection would be, how many more days I should continue with Meriofert and Fyremadel etc. I really felt like an inconvenience today and not felt that before at my clinic.

The answer to my main question was rather vague as she didn’t know my case! I don’t have any children and never been pregnant, never tried to get pregnant. I’m 40 and going down the IVF route using donor sperm because my partner has azoospermia (no sperm in semen) there is no cure for that.

I thought day 9 was very slow in arriving but now it’s done everything else to come seems just round the corner: egg collection in 2 days, embryo transfer (hopefully) only 5 days after that!

This my first cycle and I’m kinda a wreck, hats of to all you amazing women that have done this multiple times! 🧡

Hi Zucci, honestly I would try to not overthink it at this stage, I know it's so difficult not to though! This whole journey can be such a rollercoaster I totally agree. Truthfully, there is so much variation and sometimes those with less follicles have more mature eggs and healthy embryos in the end, or vice versa. Sending positive thoughts and good luck your way 💕 xx

I tend to agree with Chel = its great you got to egg collection and the most important thing about IVF is to trust your clinic because none of it will make any sense. Particularly on your first round you are only going off what you have read about and this forum is a real one for 'I got 30 eggs!' type posts and actually its much more common to get under 10. At this stage they can't tell the quality, and even if they are big they dont know there is actually an egg in there. All you can do is reassure yourself you are in safe hands, you have done all the right things up to this point, and focus on positive thinking. I really recommend the mindful IVF app which I use on every cycle and it just gives you 10 mins a day to chill and stop overanalysing.

I have often had EC on day 8 or day 10 of stims so its very common.

Think of it as a hurdle race! You have got to EC.. next will be the call about fertilisation, then the day 3 call and if you are lucky day 5, then transfer etc etc.. take each day as it comes (as patronising as that sounds its soooo relevant for IVF - one bad day doesnt necessarily mean a bad round) - masses of luck! x

I had 5 follicles - 2 of them showed up on my last scan. Until that point it was only 3 follicles and I was *gutted* BUT....

I had 4 mature eggs, 4 fertilised and I have 1 in the oven (got my BFP) and 2 in the freezer.

You have to trust the clinic. There is no set dates or timings for this. They will look at how your body is reacting and make a call that is totally unique to you.

I also had a 3 day transfer (again I was gutted!) but it all worked out for the best.

I know it's a horrible experience when you have someone that isn't familiar with your case, but it sounds like they were just the messenger. Your doctor and embryologist made the decision on your egg collection date.

I wish you all the luck in the world tomorrow with egg collection.

You really do only need one good egg for the magic to happen.

xx

Yay, well done for getting to egg collection. It’s hard to know if 5 is good or not, if it were me I’d be delighted with 5. Now fingers crossed there are juicy mature eggs in each of those follicles. Relax and let your body do it’s thing! Best of luck! Keep us posted! Xx
