FET and new guidelines

Hi everyone, we are planning to have a FET in a couple of months (we already have a little boy. It was a fresh embryo transfer). The clinic said I wouldn't have a pre treatment scan. They are trying to limit the number of interactions between patients and practitioners due to COVID, which I fully understand. But I am wondering what impact it could have on the treatment. What if I have underlying problems I am not aware of? The nurse said to me not to worry as pre treatment scan are more important for women who will have to go through the stimulation stage. I would like to know what your thoughts are?

That’s interesting to know. We are starting to think about going for FET again as our LG is 2. I emailed my clinic last week but they didn’t mention this so would be interesting to hear what would happen if we didn’t have a scan x

Sorry to jump in but what is a pre-treatment scan for? Covid? Xx

It is an internal scan you need to have before starting a fertility treatment. My understanding is that they look a the health of your ovaries and uterus. For e.g are there any fibroids, ovarian cysts etc... I have no symptoms but it has been about 3 years since the last treatment.

It will be just and ultrasound to check everything all ok before starting

I recently had a second round of ivf with a brand new clinic (fresh cycle) and i didnt have a baseline scan. This was back in Feb before Covid. I did think this was odd as it was a different clinic from my first cycle and almost 6 months after it failed.

Each clinic is different, but i totally understand your anxieties xx

My clinic said It had been imposed by HEFA. Diane, do you you if it's correct?

Hi Lou,

I’ve always had a scan prior to starting treatment and think I’d be a bit annoyed not to have one. Although like you say, I understand the need for adjustments at the moment.

I did have a cycle cancelled due to the results of one of the scans (ovarian cyst). I guess if I hadn’t that would have been picked up at a later scan but it would be so upsetting to have a cycle cancelled when you were already part through your meds. X

Hmm I don't know which clinic you are with but Care are still doing pre-treatment scans...I suppose you will have to have a down regulation scan (if your FET is medicated) so if anything was wrong it would show then. However you will have already started the meds!

Hi Zoelea, my clinic is CARE. I thought all the clinic from the same chain would be consistent in their way of working. Yes I will have the down reg scan so if something is wrong, they will see it but I would be frustrated.

Hi there,

Yes it’s a tricky one because I would have wanted to have a scan before my FET I feel it’s quite important. Can you speak to them and say you feel strongly about it? Surely if you are paying for it then they will consider it?

I already have a 3 year old son who was a fresh embryo, at the time we had one other embryo to freeze which wasn’t quite as good quality. I had the FET in January and I’m now almost 22 weeks pregnant!

Wishing you the best of luck with your FET xx

Hi, I’ve always had medicated FET cycles and I’ve never had pre-treatment scans. The clinic give me something to stop me ovulating (been different every time, once I had an injection, once I had a drug I inhaled through my nose daily, once I had drugs to inject for the 3 days I was due to ovulate) so the baseline hasn’t really been relevant. They’ve only scanned me about 10days in to see what the endometrium looks like and it’s thickness.x

This is interesting. I guess some clinics don't think it is necessary when having a medicated FET

I think when it comes to medicated FET they are controlling all of your hormones for the complete cycle so they’re not having to look at your follicle progress to see what your natural hormones are doing, they switch all your normal hormone rises and falls and ovulation off. If you’re doing FET naturally then absolutely a baseline / pre-treatment scan would be needed.
