Have any supplements increased the length of your cycle?

Hi there,

Have you taken any supplements which have increased the length of your cycle at all? I have taken a number of supplements for many years in this ttc battle, although I took Vit D and Turmeric anyway. I take Vit E, a probiotic from Optibac, and an antenatal supplement from Biocare. About 2/3 months ago I added Co Q-10 and selenium (because the selenium came free with it and it's good for thyroid function which I have a problem with) and L'arginine. I also upped my Vit D intake as blood tests showed it's a little low for fertility (if you believe the book It starts with the egg). My cycle length went from regular 29/30 day cycles to 33 days. I've had 2 x 33 day cycles in a row now and today is the 33rd day of this cycle too. It's never been consistently this long before and I'm wondering if anything I'm taking is causing this? I'm not overly worried but just very curious to know why it's happened and why my cycle has suddenly increased in length.

Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated, as always.

Many thanks

xx

It may be worth looking into Angus Cactus (vitex) it is supposed to regulate your cycle. I was taking it for several months and noticed a difference and also sleeping better. I stopped though as my IVF clinic didn’t want me to take it as they simply didn’t know much about it xxx

Thanks. My cycle is really regular though that's what's strange. It's just jumped from 29/30 days to 33 days and I think it's something I've started taking. x

Vitamin D3, vitex, maca and DHEA are supposed to be good for egg quality and balancing hormones. X

I think its good u are regular. Did u see a change in ovulation dates too?

I wish i could regulate my cycles.

I am on most of what you mentioned apart from selenium (im not sure of the interaction with my levothyroxine 75mg)

I have also read that supplementing with turmeric after ovulation isnt beneficial so i stopped it together. Do you have any info on this?

I wanted to try maca but appears its not recommended if you are hypo xxx

That's so interesting, thanks so much for your response. I'm also on levothyroxine. Is this not meant to be a good mix with selenium?! I don't have any info on turmeric based on what you've said no, but I'm now going to investigate! x

Its not necessary the mix (selenium is good if you are hypo) but since my levothyroxine is been adjusted a few times i dont think i want to add supplements that can influence it. Gp says one thing ivf clinic says another thing im just fed up with it.

I did take that advice and instead of supplements i added more eggs and nuts to my diet such as brazilian nuts xxx

That's really useful. Thanks so much for sharing, this is much appreciated. x

YES! I have taken to pregnancy supplements (Pregnaplan and seven seas) which COMPLETELY screwed my cycles. I contacted both companies who told me separately it was impossible but lo and behold as soon as I stopped each time my cycles went straight back to normal length. They were mainly vitamins but there must be something in it and it was actually 18 months apart this happened xx

Hi, thanks for your response. Pregnacare made me very unwell and gave me a massively upset stomach. I was so unwell I had to come home from work one day! However this is not the same as Pregnaplan I'm sure. I wonder what it is I've taken in the last 3 months that's lengthened my cycle! x

Yes dhea and cassanovum boost both lengthen my cycles to 28 days from 25 which is totally fine

Funny you should say that. I added in more vitamin D after reading it starts with the egg and my cycle went from bang on 28 days to 32. I stopped taking them, more just through forgetting than anything else and my cycle is back to 28 days on the dot. I also take coq10 and that never had any affect on my cycle. Xxx

That’s really interesting, thank you. Initially I thought it was one of the other 2 supplements that I had started taking that might be doing it but then I remembered yesterday about increasing my Vit D dose so thought I’d include that in my post too. Thanks so much for the message. I don’t know if I should be worried or not! 33 days is quite a long cycle! X

Thanks for posting as well. I didn’t even think about the vitamin D as being the culprit. I was originally thinking it was the pregnacare but I’ve been taking them for ages and still was 28 days. Only thing I’ve added in was the vitamin D. I don’t know whether it’s a bad thing or not tbh. My sister says hers ranges from 28 to 32 days every cycle and she for pregnant thru ivf successfully. Who knows. lol. I’m hopefully getting plenty vitamin d from the sun just now! Hahaha. Xxx

Pregnacare pre conception tablets mucked up my cycles. I thought it was just my period being weird, then when I stopped the tablets they went back to normal xx

During fertility treatment I personally took all the supplements i wanted to regardless of how it changed my cycle...ivf icsi Imsi all manipulate your normal cycle anyway...and with regular scans I personally felt the fertility clinic tell you how to up and down your meds. If you're trying naturally fair enough but ow take what makes you comfortable. My cycle ranged from 28 to 36 days...felt longgggg but was told some ppl have longer cycles than others and thats normal for them. Good luck xxx
