So I posted about this a day or so ago and had a long chat with the nurse in the clinic today so thought I would share....
The reason that some clinics recommend, in the first instance, that you inject prontogest in your bum is because that is what the manufacturers of the drug recommend. It is because the bum provides a good mix of fat and muscle which aids distribution of the drug. In the thigh it is mainly muscle. The nurse was lovely and we spoke at length about it.
I’m sure I will shake it up and do both as my husband is working away next week but will see if I can inject in the bum first.
Just thought I would share this nugget of info in case it’s useful for anyone else going through the same.
Happy jabbing all 😂

It’s definitely my least favourite of all the injections, after 6 weeks of doing them daily I was pretty sore and bruised. I always did bum - my top tips for it are to stick it under your armpit or somewhere warm before injecting and make sure you give the site a good rub and walk around immediately after to help it absorb xx
Amazing well done! Did you do them all yourself?? I did my first one by myself last night and it actually wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. The only thing is that once the needle comes out I get some blood on site of the injection. Did you get that? Xx
Oh wow well done you!! No I found the needle to big and the angle too awkward to do these ones myself so hubby did them. It always bled a little every time I think that’s normal given the size of the needle! I used to keep note of which side of my bum I’d done last so I could swap each day and give one side a rest as it can get rather sore after a while. On the positive side I found it the most effective form of administering progesterone and kept my levels where they should be so they aren’t the most fun but they work!! X
My needle isn’t that long it’s just quite thick!! Obviously thicker than all other needles I’ve used before as I’ve not done an intramuscular injection. I also keep a note of which side I have injected into which is very useful. That is really interesting re being the most effective form of administering the drug. I will soldier on for sure. If it works then I’m in!! Xx
This is really useful. Thank you. Why do you put them them under armpit or somewhere warm? I think I remember the nurse saying this, but only just remembered after you said it x
I started on Wednesday nights. First one was awful. In so much pain Thursday I cried. Another one last night not so bad, but still sore this morning put I can cope with that x
All over! Normally I lie on the bed (face down) and my husband massages all over (at least just the buttock that you have injected into). I do it for a fairly good long time. Also afterwards I do some glute clenches just to keep it moving. The other thing to do is go for a walk. (This doesn’t work for me as I live in a small flat and by 8pm I’m exhausted from the drugs and can’t fathom going outside for a walk!) I do walk a good amount during the day though. I know the drug is slow release (no idea how slow) but I do think that walking helps to distribute it. I don’t know if this is scientifically accurate but it works for me! Really hope things get better for you xx
Ya, I do try to get a lot of walks in at the gym or a home/during my lunch break. I’ll keep this going, and as hubby to massage a lot more tonight. Thank you for coming back to me so quickly x
Ya, transfer on Monday....so getting nervous which is crazy considering how many times we have done this. First time on the injections though. Thank you x
My husband worked away for a whole 6 nights and I had to inject the dreaded prontogest. It's so difficult with such a long, thick needle to mentally stab yourself. I used Emla numbing cream just a pea size a few hours before injecting and felt absolutely nothing! Give that a go if you're worried. Oh and I lay on my side and reached round to inject. When hubby does it it sometimes kills and sometimes I barely feel anything I guess it just depends where it lands plus I don't numb our when he's doing it. Use a hot wheat bag before and after too and get him to run it in after injecting although I still get the lumps.
I second all of this, I also think speed is key. It can be intimidating shoving such a big needle in but you want to be quick. I also found if I took a big breath in first and then breath out strongly as the needle goes in that helps too!
Ah thank you. Good tips re the numbing cream. Can you just get that at a regular pharmacy? Ah that’s good to know re pain levels. I feel like I’m a bit more sore today and have managed to convince myself that it’s because I did the injection last night! I’ve never heard of a wheat bag before. Will investigate. Thanks for the tips xx
After a few days of them it’s normal for your bum to feel achy like you’ve done a big workout in the gym. The wheat bag will help with that but basically your body needs to repair the damage caused by the big needle every day so it’s unlikely you can ever get away without any soreness sadly. How long do you have to do them for?
Yes most pharmacies will sell it. You can get the cream alone or a pack that has cream and tegaderm plasters which hold the cream in place. Is a purple pack. If they don't have the pack just ask to buy some tegaderm plasters too. They'll prefer cream if none in stock.
I think hubby hit a nerve once because it shot down my leg and could barely walk for a day.
Wheat bag just goes inside microwave. A hot water bottle works too.
Oh and heat the prontogest under boob or wherever a few minutes before injecting
Are you sure you were on Prontogest? Some progesterone injections can be injected into the belly but I don't think Prontogest can. Worth checking the drug just in case its a different one.. xx
