What is the difference between Gonal & Menopur?

Hi ladies ❤️

Does anyone know the difference between Gonal F and Menopur?

Is it true Menopur is used mainly for women over 40 and women with low AMH?

No doctor seems to give me a straight answer!

Thanks xxxx

Hi Anna, found this for you....I was lead to believe menopur is for older patients (that's what I was given) however I have seen older ladies try both on here and have different results. Sometimes ladies get better results from one or the other, vice versa etc.xx

Thanks so much lovely, as always.

How’s the transfer going? Hope you are resting and relaxing ❤️❤️

You're welcome. I got some sketchy replies when I challenged my NHS clinic about trying something else, they werent for budging and just said they are the same but due to my googling nature I knew that wasnt quite true! Not sure of cost plays a part. Im doing ok thanks. We fly out to Athens tomorrow so not long now...eeeeeek!xx

I am trying to decide between two clinics - one wants me to take just Menopur and the other wants me to take just Gonal....😫

Beautiful Athens!!!!! Yay!!!! So excited for you. Flying out to bring home your baby embryo - keep us posted! Will be praying for you ❤️

Its hard to know what to do for the best isnt it. If it was me I would challenge each clinic as to why they are specifying gonal f instead of menopur....vice versa. See what kind of response you get and go from there, its may give you more confidence with how they explain things to you.

Thank you! Yes hopefully picking up my baby/babies. I will let you all know how it goes, always so nervous until I know defrost goes ok.xx

in reply toCinderella5

You wouldn’t believe the responses:

Gonal: easier for you to administer

Menopur; that’s what we always use at our clinic

Wow - so scientific 😂

Babies!!!!!!! Hopefully twins?! I think the defrost has a 95% success rate so I am sure you will be ok 😍❤️

Oh jeezo, I'm not surprised you're confused.....I thought they would at least offer some kind of scientific explanation! Perhaps some of the other ladies can give their experiences....Ive only tried menopur.

Well the hope is to put 2 embryos back so fingers crossed.xx

I was given menopur last time and it's on my protocol this time too. I'm 32. I had a good response last time, I've never challenged it but I assume it's what my particular clinic use xx

Hello, not sure of the difference but I had vastly different results with the two drugs in terms of embryo quality.

1st round -age 37, AMH 37, menopur and cetrotide. 11 eggs collected, 5 fertilised and 1 very poor quality blastocyst on day 5. Transferred but BFN

2nd round - age 38, AMH 20.7, gonal-f and buserelin (different clinic). 9 eggs collected, 6 fertilised, 2 embryos transferred on day 3 (due to embryo quality issues last time), two five day blastos and two six day blastos on ice. BFP, 13 weeks pregnant with one baby.

Just wanted to share my experience in case this helps in any way!! X

Thanks SO much and congrats ❤️

Looks like Gonal is the winner 😊

Oh, and gonal SO much easier to administer. Mixing menopur was an added stress!! x

Hello

I (32 with PCOS) was on menopur on my first two rounds of IVF and I had a poor response so much so that both cycles were cancelled prior to egg collection. I’m currently on Gonal F and I’ve responded much better. As frustrating as it is they don’t really know what you’re going to respond better to until you’re on the medication.

Good luck!!

Xx

Thanks so much ❤️❤️

Menopur is 50% fsh and 50% LH, gonal f is just fsh. So that’s why people respond differently. I’ve had better eggs and embryos on bemfola (gonal f equivalent) and my consultant says my eggs don’t like excessive LH.

Thank you Orla 🙏🏻❤️

Hey I haven’t used them both so can’t compare but just incase anyone is on Menopur and worried.

My cycle was Menopur only. I’m 33 with an AMH of 20.4 - 18 eggs, 12 fertilised, 10 day 5 blastocysts, 1 transferred for BFP & 9 Frosties.

However I did get late onset OHSS and I’m pretty sure the clinic only used Menopur so not sure there was science behind their reasoning 🤷‍♀️. It really seems like people react so differently.

Wishing you lots of luck in your upcoming cycle ❤️ x

I'm nearly 39 with high amh 45.2 and recently been on low dose menopur alongside fyremadel and fostimon

2nd cycle, 13 eggs, 12 mature and 10 fertilised. Walked away with one 4ab embryo which I had transferred fresh yesterday. None to freeze.

1st cycle bemfola and supercur. 18 eggs, 16 mature and 13 fertilised. 3 to freeze 4ab, 4-5 ba hatching and 1X4BB. Fet failed. Also had really bad ohss.

I'm wondering the same thing. At 40 had gonal f and got 4 blastocysts, 1 child. At 43 had 2 rounds with menopur at the same clinic (they said it was better for older women) and got 2 blastocysts first cycle, one blastocyst one slow moving embryo. Both were BFN. I'm wondering if I wouldn't have been better sticking with gonal f...

in reply toAliceMoonpie

Thanks so much Alice. I am so sorry to hear about your BFN. Maybe Gonal F next time? xx
