When to contact midwife

I got my first BFP last week. I’ve got 20 days until my 7 week scan (not that I am counting down the days or anything). Anxiety is high but I’m desperately trying to wait out for my scan. However my clinic have said to not contact a midwife until after the scan if everything is ok but I’m worried this is too late? What did you do?

Congratulations. First time I did it early and then went on to have a miscarriage at my scan and this wasn’t passed on to the midwife so she contacted me for an appointment so the next time I waited until after my scan with fertility clinic. The midwives don’t see you until around 10 weeks anyway x

Congratulations on your BFP! It is a really nervous time but just try to take it a day at a time. I didn't contact GP / midwife until after my scan, and mine was quite late (8 weeks) so I didn't see GP until 9 weeks and had my first midwife appointment yesterday at 11 weeks. Don't worry about it, you'll have plenty of time once the clinic discharge you.

Midwife appointment is usually about 9-10 weeks so wait for your scan at seven weeks then book in with midwife a week later. Hope all goes well for you hun xx

Hi Ruby

I waited for my scan both times I’ve been pregnant mostly to avoid having to call them to cancel if something went wrong at the scan. Unfortunately I lost my first baby at almost 9 weeks and my husband kindly made the call for me, as I was not able to say those words without crying. It’s an awful call to make.

I am totally not trying to scare you or being negative, the only point of this comment is giving you a valid reason why it might be a good idea to wait for your first scan 😊

Best of luck for your scan xxx

You have loads of time so don't panic. Your clinic will want to check the viability of the pregnancy before they sign you off to a midwife. The next appointment is generally at around 10 weeks so you'll be fine.

Wishing you a healthy 9 months!

I rang my midwife the week after BFP as my clinic couldn’t fit me in until I was 9 weeks, and I wanted to have some bloods done, which I’m glad I did as they found a few abnormalities in my blood (all resolved) and get my 12 week scan book in. it’s completely up to you, it’s your body and your baby!

Congratulations on getting your BFP :) I too was unsure on this, but had my first midwifes appointment yesterday at 6 weeks. I would just contact your doctors surgery and ask for their reccomendation. Wishing you all the best xx

Hello, congratulations 💕 once I got my 7 week scan they discharged me and gave me a number to contact to book my 12 week scan and midwife appointment. I’m sure your clinic will keep you right when you go for your 7 week scan. Good luck, I was a bag of nerves at my 7 week scan. My 12 week is in two weeks... ekk 🤞🏼

Hi, congratulations!! 💕

I had my scan at 7 weeks and I booked my midwife appointment straight away. My midwife at the GP’s do not see any one before 8 weeks. So I have my 1st appointment next week at 9 weeks.

I contacted them when I was 6 weeks just before my scan, i wish i had waited as they called to book in my appointment the day my miscarriage was confirmed. Next time 🤞 I will wait till after the scan .

The clinic told me to wait until after the first scan a.d then they'll advise you to contact the midwife

Remember that most of the ladies who have conceived naturally will phone to make their booking appointment at 5ish weeks when they find out they have a positive pregnancy test. So if you phone to book later you might end up with a late booking appointment and scan if your area is very busy. x

Yes this was the case for me too. They usually have an initial appointment before the booking appointment as well so worth looking into it now

Congratulations. Yes, the community midwifes won't see you until later in pregnancy, after your viability scan, but do inform your GP of your pregnancy and they'll arrange for the community midwife to get in touch with you later on. My GP referral was done but not actioned by the midwifes, probably because we live on a border of two counties, so I had to chase them up but it all got resolved. Good luck with your viability scan - it will be a magical moment. xx

I’ve always seen my midwife at 8/9w but if we conceive again I’m not going make the booking app until after 10w we’ve mc 3 times at 12-13w and I’ve booked in 3 times was just a waste of paperwork. If your getting an early scan at 7w that’s fine to arrange an app after that there no real hurry. Congrats hope everything goes well for u xx
