5 weeks 4 days, scan next Thursday. Started spotting on Tuesday just very very small dark brown spots on and off until today which became more, not bright red but more then just spots. Stopped again but I can’t help but thinking it’s over. I’m so upset and don’t know what to do, rang my fertility clinic and they said just have to wait until next week they can’t scan me today. If bleeding got more to call the clinic.
I know that some people had bleeding with IVF and it was all fine but with previous miscarriages I just think it’s over. 😢

Hi. Brown spotting is old blood, often caused by pessaries irritating the cervix. If you are still using them, then try the back passage to give the front a rest. Also could be a sign of infection, so drink plenty of water and make sure you wee lots of nice clear urine. Hope all continues as it should and all goes well with the scan. Diane
I did change the pessary to rectal when I got the spotting but didn’t seem to help. Today scared me more as there was more spotting, a bit more red. I drink a lot of water urine clear not dark. I really hope it doesn’t progress to become a miscarriage
hi, sorry I know this is an anxious time . I had the same between 4-5 weeks. I was distraught and went to my GP who sent me for HCG. I had bright red spotting on and off but all was ok. There were little haematomas on the 7 week scan. My clinic didn’t help me and told me just to wait until 7 weeks but my GP really helped me which I was very grateful for. The nurse at the EPAU said that while spotting wasn’t normal it was very common. I’ve everything crossed for you, I remember well what an anxious time that was x
I actually work at my GP practice I’m a pharmacist there but we have no nurses today to do blood and the whole NHS system is down so I have to wait until Monday.
I also rang the EPU and left a voicemail but I don’t think anything can be don’t today. I just have to wait.
Thanks for replying and giving me a bit of hope. I really hope that it’s haematomas.
I was 13 weeks. Started just a little red on wiping one night but then the next day quite a bit on wiping. I called 111 as it was the weekend. Had a scan at EPU a couple of days later and all was ok. No explanation.
I have never got past 6 weeks in previous pregnancies (not IVF) thats what worries me. Obviously this pregnancy is different. I’m on franmin, prednisolone and aspiring also had intralipids. But just can’t help being so scared after all this I’m miscarriaging again.
thank you, I have so much planned for this weekend husband and father in law birthday, some food festival but I think I just stay home but that would drive me mad. Can’t wait for the scan and I hope it’s all positive news for me I so so much want this to work.
I’ve been having brown spotting since the 2ww, so after my positive, the consultant asked me to come in and did hcg tests and they were pretty high, so was told not to worry about it. Continued having it for the next 2 weeks, had the viability scan and all was okay, heartbeat and all. The theory was that my uterus was working over time and maybe there’s a leaky blood vessel, to avoid elevating my heart rate. 2 days later I got A LOT of red bleeding with some big blood clots but no cramping, went to a&e that evening and to the EPU the next day and it was all still okay and the heartbeat was still there. Turned out I had a pretty big subchorionic haematoma which doesn’t affect the pregnancy at all. And I’m still spotting at almost 8 weeks.
So it’s not necessarily bad, could be just that your body is experiencing a lot of hormones or a haematoma or it’s the effect of all the drugs. But I fully understand your worry, I’m still worried about my spotting and will probably get scans every 2 weeks if I’m honest. Having other pregnancy symptoms around it reassures me a bit, but they come and go so I’m stressed when I don’t feel them.
Does this pregnancy so far behave differently than the previous ones?
thanks for replying, so glad everything is going well for you.
I really don’t know, I had 3 pregnancies before not IVF, first one ended in miscarriage after 6 weeks we even saw the heartbeat had strong pregnancy symptoms but when the spotting started I had a bit of cramps. Second one was ectopic which I felt very sick within a week and then emergency surgery last pregnancy was missed miscarriage I had D&C this was last year before IVF.
This is IVF pregnancy with full hormone support and immune therapy support so I was hoping I have no complications but now with this I have lost my hope.
I really don’t know what to think anymore I just have to wait and see what happens it’s so hard I just want to fast forward to 25th to get the scan.
It sounds like you’ve been through a lot so I understand your pessimism, but I’ll be holding my hope for your current pregnancy as it sounds like you’re being monitored, you’re on progesterone and immuno support, this is a different embryo than the previous ones and it has a brand new chance, plus this one was created under IVF and probably chosen as the best one in the lot for your transfer, and you don’t have any cramps or pains. Maybe all of these changes were all you needed to get past the 6 week line. Spotting is common in IVF due to the extra progesterone, and haematomas even more so, with the most popular theory being that the catheter bruises the uterus during transfer. I’ll be holding my fingers crossed for you! But you’re right, all you can do is wait and maybe it’s a good idea to continue with your weekend plans as it may make the days go by faster. Best of luck! Xx
Thank you, spotting has become less on and off today. Keeping myself busy with seeing friends to not think too much. Can’t wait to have the scan on Thursday EPU said to go on Monday if bleeding got worse.
I had something similar around 8 weeks and it was a hematoma, all was well and I now have a little girl. Hang in there, I know how challenging it is and hopefully you can get the tests soon and the reassurance that all is well xx
She said if the bleeding got worse come on Monday otherwise to wait to go to my fertility clinic as the don’t recommend 2 scans in one week. I dont know what I should do l see what happens until Monday.
hello! Just wanted to say I hope you are ok. I had this too at 7 weeks. It was a spotting. I went to work anyway but by the time I got to the office, 30 min later, popped into the loo to check the spotting as you do! Chunks of blood clots fell out. It was so much I had to flush a few times to get rid of it. Scheduled a scan with the clinic and it turned out to be a hematoma. I was on aspirin and clexane, so doctor asked me to stop the meds for 48 hours and to rest. Obviously I was neurotic and IVF can do that to a person… I cried and grieved but feet up and rested, took my other meds and 48 hours went in for a scan and it was gone! So started up on the aspirin and blood thinners again. I am currently 23 weeks… I know you know your body but we know nothing until we know something. Sending you much love…
Thank you 🙏🏽 I’m so glad everything is going well. Spotting has eased a bit it’s on and off not I stopped the aspirin for now, can’t wait to go my scan on Thursday whatever the result this wait is torture 😞
I hope the spotting has stopped. I had something similar at exactly the same time. It turned out it was a hematoma. I was sent to strict bed rest for weeks. It disappeared in a few weeks and I am now 18 weeks pregnant. Keeping my fingers crossed for you! I know how hard it is.
