What if you’re pregnant already when you start IVF?

Hi all,

This is probably a stupid question, but I’m going to ask anyway...

So, our brief history is that we tried naturally for about 18mths, then told husband has a low sperm count and was referred for fertility treatment. First did 3 cycles of IUI, none of them worked. Then moved on to IVF. 20 eggs retrieved, 16 fertilised, 9 made it to blastocyst stage. We achieved pregnancy on first fresh embryo transfer, but unfortunately the pregnancy didn’t develop and I miscarried at about 10 weeks. The second frozen embryo transfer was a non-starter as it didn’t implant. We are just about to start a new cycle for frozen embryo transfer, but have been trying naturally in between, including in my current cycle. I will start the injections this Saturday, day 21 of my cycle.

My question is, if by some miracle I had got pregnant naturally this month, would the IVF drugs prevent the pregnancy from continuing?

Very unlikely that I am, so it’s probably a void point, but I am just wondering if anyone has advice or experience in this situation?

Hi my friend started her injections and then tested 3 days later just encase and it was positive. The clinic hold her to stop the injections. She’s now 15 weeks and healthy.

Great, thank you that’s really helpful. It’s too early to test yet, but just to put my mind at rest, I might take a test next week by which time I will have only just started the injections.
