Upcoming HSG

Hey everyone.

I've got my HSG (or Dye Test) coming up next week on Tuesday and I'm a little nervous. I've spoken to an amazing fertility nurse that's taken me through the process and told me what's going to happen, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect pain/discomfort wise? She told me to take some ibuprofen/paracetamol beforehand and my pain tolerance is pretty high, but I just wondered if anyone else could tell me what it's like (no horror stories if you can help it, please! I'm trying not to be scared!) Xx

Hello

I was also a bit nervous about undergoing this procedure, I also consider myself to have quite a high pain tolerance. Basically, I think its luck of the draw, I found mine really painful at the time and for a few hours after. I went home to bed with a hot water bottle. Other people have no pain at all and go back to work! I've even heard of people who have had it twice one painful and the other pain free. I think be prepared; take the pain relief before hand, expect the worse but hope for the best!!

Good luck!!

xx

Thank you Emma! I think because I've had a couple of ectopics there must be some scar tissue or blockages in my fallopian tubes, so I'm really hoping it will just be a little scar tissue and not a full blockage which might really hurt? Fingers crossed it will all be ok, at least we'll know one way or another what's causing this and how to proceed. I will medicate as much as I can and go in hopeful! Xx

I'm really sorry for your losses. After my HSG my results were that there were no issues, so I'm not sure if its more to do with the doctor's technique or just complete luck of the draw with regards to the pain! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you are one of the lucky ones that doesn't find it painful and you get positive results!!

xx

Thank you. I'm trying to remain super positive because we're already qualified to start IVF but we thought it was best to find out what was happening with me first. All knowledge is power and all that. So as soon as we find out the results from this, we can be a bit more sure of what will happen next and get ready for the IVF process. I'm in a bit of a limbo to be honest, but it's all very hopeful. Doesn't stop me worrying or my brain being full of medical jargon and procedural timings though... Xx

I can totally appreciate where you are coming from. I just got the go-ahead for IVF yesterday! But due to pre-planned holiday and work commitments we are going to start stimming in July (already counting the days)! You are totally correct knowledge is power! I definitely feel overwhelmed and I find researching the process helpful to regain some control of the situation. Definitely do what you can to keep yourself calm and stress free.

I did not feel anything but a bit of pressure and afterwards tiny bit of spotting and light period-like cramps. Don't be scared, it can go really easy and well :)

Thank you Tigr! That's very encouraging :) I'm going to take some paracetamol and cross all my fingers and toes Xx

I was the same. I only felt a slight period pain when the dye went in and I was fine after xx

I was really worried about mine too, but it went completely fine and I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it was. The best way I could describe is that its similar to a smear test with more pressure. I didn't have any blockages so im not sure if that made a difference. Best wishes for your HSG x

Thank you so much. I think we all build these up to be really painful invasive procedures in our minds, but if we knew more before hand it wouldn't be so scary. Thank you for the support Xx

I was terrified but it was nothing to worry about. However I didn’t have a blockage so it was straight forward for me, like a smear but I little more pressure, no pain afterwards just some cramp.

Hope it all goes well x

One thing I didn’t expect was having to do a pregnancy test immediately before they began. I understand they have to completely rule it out and I don’t know if it’s just me but the amount of pregnancy tests I’ve taken all resulting in BFNs have made them a bit of a source of sadness for me. It felt a bit unfair to have to take it when the very reason you are there is because you’ve been unable to get pregnant! Just be prepared for that.

But the actual procedure was less painful than I expected, just the usual discomfort of a smear test with slight period type cramps as the dye goes through.

I hope it all goes smoothly for you x

I didn’t feel any pain, only period-like cramps for a bit. I was so excited to get my diagnose and get a step closer to pregnancy that I didn’t worry about the procedure. It was quite fast too. They advised to go with someone to take you home after in case you feel dizzy. My hubby was on biz trip and I went with my dad 🤣 my fertility is now a family matter lol. Long story short, 1 tube was blocked completely ( and endo) and I went straight to ivf with the nhs. 7 months pregnant today, good luck! HSG is just another test on the way!

I had pretty bad cramps during and after - but no one had given me the tip to take a painkiller beforehand. They gave me one there and it settled down quickly enough and was fine after that. I think an ibuprofen beforehand would have done the trick for me.

Hope it goes well and gives you some answers xxx
