Post-HSG - extreme pain

Hi folks, looking for some advice/anyone who has experienced this...

I had my HSG test on Thursday morning, it went well, was pain free and was told my tubes were clear there and then. I had a little cramping, to be expected, that evening.

However, since Friday I have been experiencing extreme abdominal and pelvic pain. My stomach is so bloated I look about 5 months pregnant. The pain is a constant burning, tender and aching feeling and then intermittent intense sharp pain in what I think is my ovaries.

I thought I had thrush too so took a thrush tablet on Friday, that part of the discomfort calmed down but is back today. Walking is very very painful and slow and I get sharp pains when I breathe in. My urine is yellow and strong smelling.

I followed the clinic’s ‘after care’ sheet - calling the clinic number, where I was told there was nothing they could do and to call my GP. My GP managed to persuade the gynae ward to see me, after several hours of trying, on Friday night. When I went, they just asked some questions and said it sounded like some irritation, they didn’t test or swab me. Told me it would calm down.

It hasn’t, the pain was intense last night and early this morning and is still very sore now.

Did anyone else experience anything like this? Is this normal???

I’m not sure what to do now, I could go back to the gynae ward today but I’m not convinced they would do anything, they were quite dismissive.

Any advice?

I certainly never had any of these symptoms. I had quite severe period like pains for a few hours after which was very uncomfortable but that was all. This doesn’t sound good and you sound like your in a lot of pain and discomfort. Trust your body and if you know something isn’t right insist upon being seen. Let us know how you get on.

Hello I'm sorry you are not feeling well! I didn't experience any of this after my HSG. But what you are experiencing doesn't sound right. Is there any chance you could have an infection following the HSG? Yellow and strong smelling urine doesn't sound good, could this be a urine infection? I had a bad one last year it took 7 months to get rid of it and 4 lots of antibiotics, I had the yellow and smelly urine, felt bloated with sharp pain and it was horrendous going to the toilet. Is it as bad when you drink lots of water? xx

Thanks Annie, I thought it was an infection straight away, and still do, but the doc at the clinic said it was too early for that (I’m not sure I believe her!). I’ve been prone to the urinary tract infections you’ve described in the past and they’re horrible! I don’t have pain when peeing, that’s the only difference - apart from the intense pain that feels like my ovaries are on fire.

I’m heading back to the hospital now.

I got a scratch inside from my HsG which quickly turned into a bladder infection after travelling upwards and it was lucky it didn’t spread to my kidneys. The.l bloating sounds normal as

I had that too, but the rest of your symptoms sound like mine and I indeed had a infection. You need seeing quick love, don’t be fobbed off again 💕💕💕

It sounds more like an infection to me, which can happen after any of these types of procedures. A swab should definitely have been taken and I would have thought that maybe you should even have been prescribed antibiotics. Book in to see your gp again tomorrow xx

Do you think you could have a uti? Pop to a&e if you haven’t already. I had a uti after mine - coincided with a lap xx

I do remember feeling a bit sore but nothing as bad as the symptoms you are describing. I’d definitely try to see the doctor ASAP. Take care and let us know how you get on xx

Thanks everyone for your advice, sorry for the delayed reply, we went back to the hospital yesterday and were there for hours. Went to bed when I got home.

So they tested blood and urine and say there’s no sign of infection. I’m sure I’ve had that before in the past and I have indeed had a urine infection but it’s just not shown up. The junior doc was quite dismissive and kept trying to fob me off saying it’s just cramping - this pain is NOT cramping.

After pushing it (from seeing your messages telling me not to be fobbed off!), I got to see the senior doctor, she was much more understanding and actually examined me (no one had up til now), she’s taken a swab which’ll take a couple days for results.

She’s given me pain killers - they allowed me to sleep 12 hours last night! And anti biotics, even though no sign of infection she said she knows how difficult this whole time is and if it put my mind at ease she’d give me them.

I thought I’d give it a day or 2 with the pain killers and rest and if no better take the anti biotics. Today I’m thinking maybe i should just take them, I’m scared it is an infection and it does any damage.

Xx

Well done you, it’s not always easy to fight your corner but sounds like you’ve made yourself heard. Glad to hear the pain killers have given you a bit of relief. Hoping you feel better very soon xx

Well done for pushing and making sure you were taken seriously. Glad to hear you got a decent sleep, it's probably what you needed to help you fight off what ever is going on. It will be interesting for you to see the results of the swab. Hopefully you have an opportunity to rest ans get better xx
