Stopping progesterone after BFP

Hi,

Hope everyone is well.

I have been told to stop progesterone on Boxing Day as I will be 10 weeks pregnant. Also to stop taking progerva (spelling?) on that day. (I had a successful frozen ivf)

Is it silly but I’m really worried about stopping both?

I still don’t even feel pregnant but my scan a couple weeks ago clearly showed that I am.

When did you stop progesterone?

The fertility clinic have discharged me but I am wondering if I could still ring them with my concerns.

X

Hi. I’m 10 weeks on Christmas Day and stopping my progesterone pessaries. My box was only lasting until Mon 24th so I decided to start doing one a day from Friday. I read other ladies suggesting this. I didn’t want to just stop either so thought this would be the best way. And I totally get the not feeling pregnant feels. I’m sure your clinic wouldn’t mind a call if you have questions though. Merry Christmas xx

So your going to continue past Christmas Day? Thanks, I may ring them tomorrow.

Do you have any symptoms? X

No my last one will be Christmas Day. I worked out when to start doing one a day so the last would still fall on the 10th week. Give them a call tomorrow xx

I think each clinic will have their own protocol.

I took prednisone & progesterone pessaries till I was 12 weeks. But because of the spotting I had I stopped my pessaries at 11 weeks ( I’m now 17 weeks & baby is fine)

By 10 weeks the baby is quite independent & has their own blood supply & feed themselves to food via the placenta. They have evolved from an embryo to a fetus. The chance of miscarriage is significantly lower nearly as low as 12 weeks especially as you’ve seen a healthy heartbeat. I think by now baby will be fine without extra progesterone as your body is producing enough 👍 if you are concerned you could contact your clinic/GP/Midwife for advice.

Happy Christmas to you xoxo

Hi Kirsty,

I had a fresh transfer so slightly different but the clinic wanted me to stop as soon as I got a BFP. I said I wasn’t comfortable with this so they gave me another few weeks as it wouldn’t do any harm to continue them.

I stopped every night roughly at 7 weeks and went onto every second day for a week. Then as I was running out just one every few nights. I definitely think gradually coming off them was better for me...mainly just a mental thing rather than physical.

As others have said, the baby will now be supporting itself with your placent fully forming over the next few weeks.

Have a nice Christmas and wave goodbye to the pessaries!x

I felt the same about stopping progesterone, in the end went down to every other day and gradually stopped. Hopefully to re assure you my pregnancy is still going well, I think we’re so use to taking medication through IVF it’s hard to believe our bodies can do this x

Hi congratulations. My clinic told me to sreduce at 12 weeks so stopped just in 13 weeks. I was terrified. You go from hating them to them being your best friend and not wanting to let go. I even paid for a private scan a week after just to make sure baby was ok and it was. Your clinic will know what they are doing Xx

Thank you all for your replies and reassurance. I might just give them a ring tomorrow.

Also, I’m not feeling very pregnant at all. Hardly had any symptoms and feel pretty normal. Does anyone else feel this way? X

Lol feel yourself lucky not to have symptoms ! But I know what you mean it's so hard isn't it

We miss symptoms but then we worry when we do have them that it could mean something wrong

I agree with all the above advice - wean yourself off them over a week or two - you should have you 12 weeks scan then too?

Baby is pretty independent now and the progetsserone is mostly to protect the endometrial lining until the placenta has built up and it's independent

Don't worry- weaning off will allow the body to adjust and if you do get any signs as you wean off then you can discuss with clinic

Good luck xx

I stopped at 12 weeks as advised by the epu and the dr there who also happened to be a fertility dr at my clinic. I stopped mine completely and didn’t taper them down.

I was worried about it but the placenta has taken over so you don’t need to worry.

As for not feeling pregnant I felt the same (still do to a point, except for the growing belly and the odd flutter) I didn’t really get sickness, I just had sore boobs but that was mainly after lying down and I was really tired. X

I was told to stop at 12 weeks completely. It was scary but I had my 12 week scan the following week and all was fine. I didn’t feel pregnant for literally the whole time. All I had was extreme hunger from 9 weeks to 13 weeks xx

I had my viability scan last Thursday and the consultant told me to stop taking the pessaries then I was really panicky so asked if I could finish what I had which is about another 2 and a half weeks supply he said yes that was fine but I'm so scared about stopping them. I had a natural FET and was only toms on day of transfer to start pessaries as I had an early bleed on my previous fresh transfer. I'm sure I'll be fine to come off them but I can't help but worry I when I get down to the last week's worth I might try dropping them to one a day and wean myself off xxx

Yes this is what I was told as well. They didn't give me any more pessaries after my viability scan, so I've been off them for weeks already. No discernable difference to be honest! Otherwise maybe it was a little scary at first - like riding without training wheels!! Xx

Did you just stop it wean yourself off them over a few days ?? Xx

Nope I just stopped. That's what the nurse told me to do, so I just did that. I hope everything is alright, I haven't had much symptoms since tbh. I haven't thought too much about all of this until Kirsty's post!

Hi

I stopped at 12 weeks as my clinic explained that by this stage the placenta takes over and all feeds and blood supply is supplied and your body would have the correct amount of progesterone to sustain the pregnancy congratulations and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy 🤰 xxx

Had scan at 8+2 on Fri, everything looking good and Dr said I'm to start coming off progesterone next week, so in 9th week, but very gradually. I think if we do it slowly, giving body time to adjust, it'll be fine. Bit scary but also can't wait to cancel the phone alarms every 6 hours!!!

My clinic stops both at 12 weeks. I didn’t cut down gradually but just stopped entirely but I have seen this question asked lots of times over the years and many ladies do cut down gradually. As the other ladies have said, the placenta is making enough by now for you not to need supplements. My clinic also said that if it’s a boy then excessive oestrogen after 12 weeks could interfere with his development. I agree it’s scary though. To have them one day and then not the next. I had my 12 week scan about 3 days after I stopped which gave me some reassurance that everything was ok so if you don want to wait until your 12 week scan then maybe you could book a reassurance scan?

Hello,

Hope you’re doing well. We were on our 2WW together. :)

I am stopping my progesterone injections and clexane at week ten which is the 28th dec. I then continue to take progesterone pessaries (lucky me) until 14 weeks. I do think every clinic is different. I was concerned about coming off and asked about it and they said I shouldnt worry and that is why thy are tapering off rather then stopping all. I feel a bit better that I have the pessaries a bit longer. Never thought I’d say that!!

I have some symptoms I guess: super tired, really sore boobs and some nausea. I was paranoid that I had no symptoms last week and ended up paying for a private ultrasound which was worth it for peace of mind.

All the best to you. x
