Penicillin whilst pregnant

Hi all, I have recently had a BFP on my second cycle of ICSI but I now have tonsillitis and my doctor has given me penicillin! He said it’s fine to take whilst pregnant but my mum thinks I shouldn’t take it! Have any of you lovely ladies had penicillin whilst being pregnant? X

I’ve not taken it whilst pregnant but I certainly have prescribed it for pregnant women. Hopefully your doctor has prescribed it because you have a bacterial tonsillitis ( fever and often white spots or pus on your tonsils) or due to a throat swab. If I needed it during pregnancy, I would take it but only if I thought I had a proper bacterial tonsillitis. Sometimes it gets handed out a bit too much.

At the end of the day, it’s your choice. You may find the bumps medicines in pregnancy website useful.

Get well soon- don’t forget pain relief and lots of fluids! X

Sorry to jump in but just wanted to thank Zoe for the pointer to the bumps medicines in pregnancy website - I never knew of this! I stress just taking one paracetamol for a sore throat or headache and even then it’s after 3 days of suffering.

Glad to have helped- there is so much confusing information out there!

I would have said the same. If you have symptoms of infection (pus spots, high temperature, feeling cold/shivery...), then it’s important to combat these with the antibiotics. You can use paracetamol for the pain & fever, & drink plenty of fluids (even more important to push this because you tend not to drink as much because of the pain when swallowing!)

If you’re not feeling that ‘unwell’ with it, then maybe see how it goes over the next 24 hours? If your symptoms worsen, then I think that you would be better to take it, than to not. As Zoe_waning said - they are prescribed for pregnant women if they are needed, so if there was any major risk then they wouldn’t be. However, only you can make the decision. Hope you feel better soon! 💐

I had bacterial tonsillitis when I was about 8 weeks pregnant and had to take penicillin. I put off going to the GP for a week as I was too scared to take antibiotics but in the end I had to. The GP said the illness was more risk if untreated than antibiotics which are very safe x

If you want to check properly, just pop down to your local chemist’s and ask to speak to the pharmacist. They are the experts xx
