How long to take progeserone following embryo transfer?

Gabi80 profile image

Hi, following ivf embryo transfer how many weeks is usual for progesterone to be taken?

I've been given pessaries only up to week 7. however I'm worried this won't be long enough. I had previous miscarriages and heard and read that taking progesterone for longer might help lower risk of miscarriage. Please can anyone help? Thanks

I think it depends on the clinic but following a positive test I’ve always been advised to take it up until 12 weeks x

Thank you so much for your reply

I really feel intuitively I need to stay on it for longer too. I heard 12 weeks was recommended, at other clinics too.

I am currently pushing my clinic to agree to this but they are not keen. I feel there are not listening at all.

I'll keep trying!

Thank again for reply xx

It’s so hard isn’t it but I think our gut instincts often know. Maybe you could speak to your GP and get a prescription if your clinic won’t give you any? X

Yes I definitely prefer to go with gut instinct normally.

I think all us women going through ivf/icsi become attuned and better at listening to our bodies with everything they are put through! xxx

Hi

My clinic has said up to the first scan. I'm taking inter muscular injections of progesterone in my bum and I really hope I'm pregnant but my goodness I'm not sure how much longer I can handle these and I've only done 4 so far!!!

Hi, thanks so much for reply 😘

I hope those injections become a little easier for you as time goes on. Keep strong... you've got through everything up to now! Xx

My clinic say up to first scan (around 7 weeks) for a fresh cycle (though the nurse did say it was a precaution and you could stop after BFP) and 12 weeks for a frozen cycle. I don’t know why they need it to be more for a frozen cycle though. If you’re feeling uncomfortable due to previous losses could you explain this and ask to stay on it until week 12?

Hi thanks for reply 😘

Hmm that's interesting, I wonder why the difference between fresh and frozen... So much conflicting info out there!

I do feel a bit more reassured now seeing that others have been told up to 7 weeks too. Such a mix of different advice we are all being given.

i might still push for for a bit longer.... The clinic have been very reluctant up to now though, so doubt they will agree. But always worth a go! 😊

Given your previous miscarriages I would take it up until week 12. You can get it prescribed from your GP. How many are you taking per day?

Gabi80 profile image
Gabi80 in reply tosanchia46

Hi thanks for your reply 😊

I'm taking 600 mg of utrogestan (a day)

The clinic told me they are the only place I could get this. Not available anywhere else according to them!

I feel i need to keep pushing my clinic and just hope they agree to let me take it longer based on my history.

Thanks again xx

You can use a different pessary. Try fertilty2u.com or your local GP. There's cyclogest and protongest

Hiyah. Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. My clinic gave me some at start of treatment then handed me a prescription straight after transfer so I can continue until the 7 week scan if I get a positive. I guess if I get to the scan and there's a heartbeat they will give me some more although I'm registered with the Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic who have always prescribed it to me in the past as soon as I've had a viability scan. X

Sending love and all the best to you for your test xx

I'm definitely going to keep pushing my clinic to let me take it longer. I feel at least 10-12 weeks based on what everyone is saying.

My clinic have been very stuck in their ways so far tho, but will see!

Thanks again xx

I was told to take it for 12 and did so but phoned when I was running low and nurse said she’d just got back from a major conference abroad somewhere on this and there is no evidence to take it past 7 wk. I’m certainly no expert but that may be why you’ve only been given 7 wks worth. It’s worth asking. This was only a few weeks ago I was told x

Thanks for your reply 😘

That's interesting. That's also what my clinic keep saying. No evidence for it.

Seems there is just so much conflicting info being given out by the clinics.

I suppose we have to trust our instincts during this journey 😊

Good luck and sending positive wishes xx

My fertility clinic said until 9 weeks. Was taking 600mg utrogestan. However I was bleeeding so asked them to give me to last until 12 weeks. I asked my ob to prescribe poi. So in addition to the utrogestan pessaries also got 100mg of poi for two weeks then reduced it by myself to 50mg for another week. So basically took until the end of 12 weeks. Bleeding stopped at about 10 or 11 weeks.

Hi thank you so much for your reply 😊 that's really interesting. It sounds like your clinic are being helpful and treating you as an individual rather than just another number.

This forum has helped me so much more than my clinic have. I'm really grateful to have come across it. xx
