Having the Mirena fitted later today ...

Feeling terribly nervous about having it. Mainly because the endo is bad enough as it is and it seems that the coil will either make things worse or considerably better. I feel like I'm playing roulette while I continue to buy time and do my menopause dance...Will let you know how I get on. Everything crossed ! p.s. do I need to be concerned that I've not been offered any pain relief beforehand ? I've read on here some ladies having it fitted under a general ? My consultant poo-pooed that and said it was like having a smear ! (I beg to differ after having a cervical biopsy ! LOL!!) Awwwwww !

Definiteley take pain relief before the procedure and make sure it has had time to work, if it gets too painful STOP and ask to be given entonox (gas and air) which might mean a new appoitment at a hospital where it can be provided to you.

Those of us that hve had it put in under general anaesthetic also had lots of other things done too, like biopies and lap ops etc,

I've not heard of anyone having it put in place under GA nd nothing else done too.

It does take longer than a smear, if you have, like most endo ladies do, a retroverted uterus (tilted).

There are thousands and thousands of happy mirena women around, versus a much smaller percentage that have it removed because it doesn't suit them, so fingers crossed it will in time work wonders for you too.

Thanks ever so much Impatient ! Have been very worried about the pain, the biopsy I had recently was agony. I am feeling so undecided today. I stopped bleeding two days ago and am on day three bleed free- the longest I've gone in a VERY long time. I have been bleeding constantly since 13th Nov. Do I sit tight and wait to see what happens (be at the mercy of my endo !) or bite the bullet, have the coil and think of the long term ? I was diagnosed 11 yrs ago and the last year in particular has been horrific.

I'd definitely give the coil a chance to work. Like all things for tackling endo it is not an immediate relief, but if it can stop heavy bleeds it is the most wonderous relief.

My periods for years were taking up more and more of the month, and I got to the stage of small bleeds at ovulation too (and period pains like hell) so having the mirena to stop all that was so liberating. It gave me back my life in so many ways.

Certainly worth trying it out. Once it's in you need to allow about 4-6 months for it to really work. It does give me the odd tweek and twinge every now and then, but my god it's noting to hours and days of constant period cramps and pain.

If it doesn't work out and you do get too many unpleasant side effects then it can be removed, but I'd still recommend doing your level best to put up with it till you can see if that does the trick.

Fingers crossed for your implantation. Wiggling toes while having the procedure done is one way to distract you from the uncomfy hurt and distract you a bit.

I'm back ! Having a lie down as I'm feeling a bit below par. The registra was lovely and the two nurses talked to me throughout helping take my mind off things ! It took about thirty mins. Started off very similar to a smear but obviously a fair bit more painful once he starting sticking the thing in lol ! He's asked me to stick at it for a eight to nine months if I can and if things have not improved or have gotten worse for me at that point, it'll be time to take it out and try the thermal ablation next. Feeling bloated, swollen and very crampy now. keep getting sharp twinges but nothing horrific. I took some co codamol earlier so hopefully that's helping ! X

Had mine fitted 6 weeks ago just took paracetamol before felt some discomfort for about 48 hrs then I was fine. Wasn't happy with the constant bleeding but that settles so I'm told. things are no worse and should settle down in time. Just feel really hungry and a bit bloated.

Well, feeling much better today. Looking very bloated (about 7 months pregnant lol!) but so far so good. Getting the odd sharp twinge in my left hand side but nothing as bad as the endo pain. xxx
