Mirena fitting - extreme pain

Hi guys.

I’ve had the Mirena fitted today, recommended as a treatment for my endo.

I have to say it was one of the most painful things I have ever had done; my body went into full shock, shaking, sweats, vomiting. The doctor said it should have been done under GA in hindsight (wish they’d done it during my lap in March!!). They did a scan to make sure it was in the right place, and all was fine.

Has anyone else experienced extreme pain during the fitting? It was 5 hours ago and it has eased off slightly to more of a severe period cramp. I have quite a high pain threshold (as do all of us endo sufferers!) so I just wondered if I’m strange for having such a reaction! X

I had extreme pain and GP struggled to fit it with me. She said that it can be very painful for ladies that haven’t had a baby. It should ease soon. Hope it helps with your symptoms x

Hi, I have one fitted but it was during my surgery, I’m a bit worried now, how do they take it out and does it hurt? X

They take it out like a smere test but pull it you have to have a big cough then they pull it out the pain I had was awful x

For me, the removal was nowhere near as painful as the insertion. They literally just pulled it out and it gave me a split second ‘lurch of the tummy’ type feeling, but I think that was more to do with how anxious I was, thinking about how much it might hurt. Then after that I had no more pain x

Hi I had one put in and had to get it out after a month the pain was just too much constant agony it hurt coming out too but eased off soon as it was removed so glad I had it out wish I'd stuck to my guns and carried on saying NO x

Honestly, it's the most painful thing i've ever experienced. My body rejected the regular copper coil, but not completely so i had to have that removed, and then have the mirena fitted. It was god awful and i feel so sorry for anyone that walked past that room due to the extreme cursing and shouts, but since having it my endo symptoms have mellowed somewhat and i'm so glad i had it!

Stick with it for 6 months or so and let your body accept it and it should hopefully be worth the pain.

Thanks everyone. Glad I’m not the only one, the doctor made me feel like I was being really dramatic! The pain was 10x worse than after my laparoscopy too. Didn’t get much sleep last night but it seems to be easing slightly, I want to try and persevere to see if it helps. Will keep you updated x

I was offered this supposedly, a remedy, but I point blanked refused it there and then, as I felt that having something stuck in me, would be uncomfortable anyway. I requested Zoladex and this has worked wonders. I wonder if they are not offering this remedy because of cost. I think Mirena coil (as the word suggest, coil which wont be pleasant) is cheap? What do you gals think? Try zoladex and it may be the case we need campaign for this medicine purely because it works, it outweighs other alternatives and just because it is expensive we should not be denied this medicine.

I had the coil fitted in a lap on 10th August to treat my endo too. I am lucky as i didn't have to experience it going in, however, the constant bleeding and pain i still have is draining me so much. I want to cry every day, but am trying to remain positive, but I am drawing to just wanting it removed!

Hi! I saw this notification on my emails and really wanted to reply to reassure you. I got my most recent coil fitted under GA, but not the first one. The pain during and after insertion of my first coil was honestly one of the most horrific pains I have experienced, and I was so worried that I wasn’t supposed to be in that much pain as the doctors said I ‘may have a few period type cramps’! But after a couple of days the pain died down and I didn’t experience pain like that again in the rest of the time I had it. My most recent coil has been giving me really intense pains for about three weeks now since its insertion, but I’ve read lots and lots of stories from people who have said they had really bad pains for up to 6 months and then it worked wonders for them with their endo pain.

Sorry for the long winded answer! But I Just wanted to give you some hope that it can get better. Hope you feel some relief soon xxx

Hi, please keep a record. Mine hurt the full 3 years I had one. When it got removed the pain finally stopped. Like it really hurt as it was being removed then relief.

I think the curvature of my spine was the problem (scoliosis) but no one ever said they could see any cause for the constant pain I had.

One gyno told me to get counselling, so take care keep a record and make sure someone you trust is aware of what's happening. Best of luck

Yes going to keep a diary of what happens. If the pain is still as bad after a couple of weeks I’ll reevaluate and see; depends how long I can deal with it!x

I've never given birth or had a miscarriage before; and have had the mirena fitted. Just wondering where you got this info? My gynecologist never flagged this up for me.

It was very painful when it was put in place, and definitely for a while afterwards, not excruciating though.

I think it varys so much for everyone.

The mirena has reduced my bleeding but the pain is actually getting worse. Will give it another month but am pretty sure my consult will ask me to stick with it!
