Extreme reaction to mirena coil fitting

Has anyone else had a really bad reaction from having a coil fitted?

My mirena coil was being pushed out by my body and my doctor thought we should try taking it out and fitting a new one in. I had a traumatic and painful experience where my whole body shut down and was in incredible pain and almost in and out of consciousness. The second coil had to be taken out and took me ages to get back to normal and go home. Was in pain, shook and had really low blood pressure.

My doctor said that this happens sometimes but it was very weird and random.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

I can not process this on my own.

Your not aloneI was advised a mirena coil as contraception as I had negative reactions to the pill even the one designed for people sensitive to the pill. I didn't collapse but I was in constant pain, fatigue, moody the only way I can explain how it felt up there was it was like had a sharp spring up there and depending how I moved or sat I got a stabbing feeling which I'd be buckled over feeling sick and dizzy. I got it removed but it took me a long time to get better or back to some form of normality If anyone I know mentions getting 1 I suggest they try something else like the implant cause if there is a reaction it's alot easier to remove. I hope your on the mend now 😅😁

Hey there loanaap

Yea! Slightly different outcome but pretty much same reaction.

Luckily had local anaesthetic but still found the fitting incredibly painful. As I stood up I felt a bit in shock and was taken to the waiting room to sit for a bit.

That’s where I started to experience dizziness, nausea (hobbled to the bathroom several times thinking I was going to vomit) extreme pain due to cervical contractions (my midwife sister described this as ‘cervical shock’). They lasted a couple of hours.

I had another week of painful (but less intense) cramps and then things started settling down.

Neither the nurses or the consultant seemed particularly surprised by my reaction! I think it just can happen to some women. I in no way regret getting it done, but I think the combo of pelvic inflammation and have not had children meant it was a difficult fitting.

Did you get it done at a hospital gynae ward or a GPs surgery?

There are other contraceptives you could try, but also if you do want to give merina a go, maybe try anaesthetic?

Had it done at the gp. The first one was fitted during a lap and I was under total anesthesia but when I woke up I had a really bad reaction and was in constant terrible pain for over two months and bleeding for over a month. I was told all that was normal but it didn't feel normal at all and I could barely get through the days I don't think I can go through it again and try and have another fitted. I'm too traumatized to be fair.

Maybe it's just my body but I've tried four or five different pills before this including the depo injection and none of it went well with my body

I also have celiac disease and in combination with the depo I was also diagnosed with osteoporosis. Apparently the depo messes with estrogen levels and being already malnourished made my bones brittle.

I am starting to feel like I am done with experimenting with any kind of pill and feel like a guinea pig so far. I always get the 1 in a thousand reaction to stuff for some reason. And gp's always say it's fine, this time it should be okay. This happens to only a very small percentage of women, it won't happen to you lol

Yeah, you’re absolutely right that you don’t have to accept a doctors decision that these reactions you’re having to BC are acceptable/ normal. So frustrating. I think so many of us have more chronic conditions along with the endo and this can be such a difficult balance.

Really hope you find a treatment plan that works for you, but it does sound like they need to give you other options from the mirena.

I also hope that the pain from the coil has decreased now!

Hope you are feeling less pain today. I had one inserted during a diagnostic assisted lap and took a bad allergic reaction to it. So had to go back to have it removed the pain on removal was so bad and a lot of blood though afterwards I felt great. Hope you feel less pain today and continue to have less pain each day good luck

I had a similar experience. Had the first 2 removed due to pain and my body rejecting it. The third was extremely painful for 2 months afterwards but has eased since, still not painless. You're definitely not alone.
