Colonoscopy - Bowel Endo Check

Has anyone had a colonoscopy without sedation to check for bowel endo? I have one scheduled for this week but im anxious about sedation after complications coming out of anaesthetic last time. Just wondering if/how people have found having it done?

I have all the symptoms of bowel endo but during surgery in August they checked and said bowel wall looked ok. I’ve recently had a FIT test be positive for blood and high inflammation markers. No infections. Have a lot of pain passing movements etc.

Would just like to hear any experience/advice on having colonoscopy as it’ll be a first for me.

Thanks!

Hi,

I had a colonoscopy for the first time last week. I was recommended sedation and took it. I'm pleased I did as it was painful. I had sedation and gas&air.

I asked on here about the procedure before and a few people replied with different experiences, not everybody has pain so don't want to scare you. Just sharing my experience x

Thanks for your response. I’ve got to go and collect prep Monday morning and was planning to get the nurses advice. I do continue to struggle with pain, surgery helped with flares but lower back has been consistent since.

Thank you for sharing your experience x

What endo nurses have told me in the past was to go ahead and get the IV started and then you can still have anesthesia (not general but IV conscious sedation) if it becomes too uncomfortable during procedure. They said most people end up wanting the sedation. It will depend on if the GI person doing the colonoscopy is willing to do this as it will slow the process down. IMO if they are really taking a patient centred apporoach, they should accommodate you.

I had conscious sedation, you are not asleep so it shouldn't really be risky for you. The procedure was mostly fine, a bit painful when pushing round the final corner, but only for a few seconds. I had a polyp removed and I couldn't feel that either.

To be honest, the prep was the worst part for me. Drink lots of water with it as the taste made me want to vomit. Also, get some Vaseline to protect your bottom, as mine got quite sore from all the wiping.

Not what you're looking for?
