Incidental finding of endometriosis during emergency surgery

Hello,

I had emergency surgery for an ovarian torsion and an ovarian cystectomy (dermoid cyst they said from MRI’s) and afterwards I was told there is an ‘Incidental endometriosis nodule at the left cornua of the uterus.’ I have no idea what this means?

The surgeon also saw lots of adhesions and scar tissue and apparently the cyst was attached to the bowel. As it was emergency surgery she didn’t remove any adhesions, scar tissue, the endometriosis nodule. She only removed a bit of the bowel adhesions to remove the cyst. The cyst was filling the entire pouch of Douglas.

I was told to ask my GP to refer to me the endometriosis clinic. I’m just confused what this means?

I’ve been under colorectal for a long time with raised FIT tests with no colonic disease/cause found and struggle severely with bowel symptoms. Just wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation and if anyone can help share some experience as to what a nodule is?

Hi, I'm sorry to hear of your recent emergency health issues and hope you are recovering well. I also have recently had endometriosis found incidentally (although mine was from an MRI for another health issue).

I think it's becoming more common in emergency gynae surgery for gynaecologists to check for the presence of endometriosis but few gynaecologists are experts in this condition. It sounds like they found endo during your surgery and have suggested you ask for referral to an endometriosis clinic where the clinicians specialise in endometriosis and will have a multidisciplinary team who will be better equipped to treat you for it. There are about 60 endometriosis centres in the UK, these are accredited by BSGE and you can find out more about these are where they are here: bsge.org.uk/centre/category...

I have also had to ask my GP for an endo referral. I explained my recent medical history and findings from the MRI, came along with a list of the symptoms I experience which relate to endo and asked for a referral. Unfortunately, I have only been referred to general gynaecology (I'm fighting to get this changed currently) so make sure you ask for one of the BSGE specialist endo centres. Hope this help and best of luck <3
