pre op

hey ladies,

I have my pre op this afternoon and it’s all becoming very real that I’m about to have surgery.

My pain has been pretty intense over the last week and I’m definitely ready for the surgery but I’m also getting incredibly nervous and anxious.

Did anyone else have this with their first surgery? As much as I’ve researched and feel sorta prepared it’s all still so unknown and that scares me. I think the thing that scares me most is the women who have had this surgery and it’s done nothing for their pain. I am terrified of that.

Am i just being daft or is this normal?

This is absolutely normal. I had pretty bad anxiety in the weeks coming up to my surgery and took a break off work. Find something to distract yourself in the short term. And Speak to your surgeon about your concerns, hopefully they might be able to resolve some of them.

Good luck!

Thank you 🙏

I’ve been proper getting panicky about it and today my stomach has been even more in knots which doesn’t help the endo pain 😖 stress seems to make my pain worse ☹️

hey lovely. I hope you’re ok and your pre op managed to make you feel a bit better? I had my first laparoscopy last Wednesday. I was SO nervous, I kept thinking, I really don’t want to do this, do I really need it? (I knew I did but my mind was saying anything to get me out of it) and honestly. The pain was not half as bad as I thought it was going to be. The process was so quick and really once you’re in it, you just go with it. I had a burst cyst whilst in surgery and had to stay in but even then it was absolutely fine. I have been diagnosed with stage 4 endo so I definitely needed it. When you go in for your surgery take snacks with you for after. Take a water bottle, peppermint tea, slippers, dressing gown and just prep incase you need to stay in. Honesty, I can hand on heart say it is not as bad as you think it’ll be. They give you pain killers, the incisions are minimal and you will be absolutely fine x

They already told me I will be staying the night. So bag is already packed. It’s a private hospital so a lot of stuff is provided but I am definitely taking some malted milk biscuits (my comfort food) and some tea - Yorkshire and peppermint haha. Can take a lass outta Yorkshire but not the Yorkshire out the lass.

My fears are still there but I feel more prepared. Only issue I have now is they have stopped all my pain meds except paracetamol until the surgery so I’m suffering really bad today :(

Hope you’re doing ok after your surgery x

Hello

Firstly you are NOT being daft or anything near it! I have had many surgeries and I’m always a nervous wreck. I’m going in again this Thursday for a total hysterectomy. I have no idea if I’m having keyhole or open surgery as the consultant said he will decide on the day. I’m nervous about the immediate aftermath of the surgery, the drips and catheter etc. I won’t sleep properly till it’s over (3hrs last night) Rest assured everything your feeling is normal! Best of luck I’m sure all will go just fine.

Aww I’m so sorry to hear you don’t know what’s happening. Yeah sleep is an issue for me. I’m so tired all the time. Managed to sleep well last night but I took some melatonin which helped.

Best of luck on Thursday! Xx

yes this is normal I had it with my first lap as didn’t want to be put under as had never been put under even when I had my wisdom teeth out never was put out as scared of not waking up. These are all normal. Good luck yourll be ok and in safe hands I explained how I was feeling to the nurse when she took me down for theatre and she said that in all the 20 years she had been nursing no one had not woken up after surgery as she said they keep an eye on you the whole way through. Right up into recovery. They don’t wake you up they allow you to come round on your own. I was out a while from half ten in the morning then went back to the ward at 1.45 pm and had left hospital by 2.15. Yourll be ok I promise you. You won’t even know after they put the anesthetic in you hand they tell you to talk to them and I must have gone out pretty quickly was trying to fight the sleepy ness but it comes on you awful quickly and then you don’t remember anything until you awake in recovery. I was worried I would wake up on the table as well . But as I said they monitor everything.

Thank you! It’s reassuring that I’m not the only one worried about that! Glad your surgery went well x

it didn’t go that well hun as got sepsis a few days after surgery so had to go to hospital and was in a week having iv antibiotics as well as tablets and felt awful. Am awaiting more surgery but my issue is am worried I’ll get nasty infection again that will lead to sepsis. That was with key hole and the nurse looking after me was like this sort of systemic infection may only happen if you have open surgery but unfortunately it happen to me so my recovery was longer. But I think when I have next surgery they will give me base antibiotics so it doesn’t happen again. But hey ho I was able to survive and caught it early on if my mum hadn’t been a nurse and rushed me to hospital it could have been a lot worse as my symptoms were asymptomatic. But whilst in hospital my temp increased a lot and I felt extremely weak had allergic reaction to medications that were trying to help.

it’s only 0.2 percent that get sepsis after key hole surgery I was unfortunate but other people are fine. Don’t want to scare you on that front.
