Does anyone have any experience of paying to go privately for procedures (specifically pelvic MRI with contrast/lap) in Scotland?

At my wits end and not entirely able to afford it but beginning to make enquiries just to weigh up my options and wondering where is best/affordable. The first healthcare company I’ve spoken to has told me I need to go Newcastle for the MRI 🤷🏻‍♀️

For reference I am around 12-14 weeks into a 66-72 week NHS wait for a laparoscopy and now several years into a somewhat never ending journey 🙃

hello I’m in Scotland - not paid privately for a scan but have paid private for a consultation then surgery (laparoscopy), if you need help with a provider/ hospital send me a dm 🥰

i tried to get a private MRI scan done a couple of years ago in Glasgow. I had saw one of the consultants at Rosshall who is also in the specialist endo centre at QEUH and was told that they didn’t have specialist radiologists at Rosshall so there was no point in paying to have a scan done there. At least they were honest but it was very frustrating. Fortunately I have a very good GP who pushed for me to get it done through the NHS specialist instead but I had to wait a lot longer.

That’s frustrating but making a lot of sense in why I’m not finding many options!

I think the waiting lists are so long and a lack of joined up thinking makes it really difficult to navigate. I’m now about halfway through a 2 year wait for surgery at the specialist centre in Glasgow but they are only prepared to address part of my issue and won’t even discuss how the rest is impacting me. I’m not sure I want to put myself through surgery if it’s not going to sort everything out. I’ve asked about getting another scan to see if things have changed but have been refused as they have decided on a treatment plan and that’s it - I’ve to take it or leave it. I’m currently considering going to a private ultrasound clinic in London which can do specialist TVU scans…

That’s awful. Completely agree with you about the lack of joined up thinking. I’ve spent years being passed back and forward between gynae and gastro because each says the other is to blame. Soul destroying

Me too always thought it was gastroenterology and IBS!

Hi I am in north Lanarkshire and I seen on here that a lot of women were going for MRI scans however I phoned my gynos secretary and she said there’s not point in paying privately for an MRI because when they do the Laparoscopy op they will be able to see it anyway. However there is not waiting list here because they have to help the women who they think has cancer first( understandable) I looked into it privately at breahead and it starts from £4000 for the laparoscopy with Ross hall and about £250 for the first consultation. However iv noticed on here that when women get that done that the endo can come back. Hope you get it sorted 🙂

I would check out Spire - my procedures (ultrasounds and laparoscopy) etc managed to get covered through my work insurance but at a time it was looking like we might need to pay for stuff ourselves (we had saved up for some of it) but they did offer payment plans which is what we would have ended up using so it might be worth looking into it.

In terms of the care and ease in getting appointments etc I'd highly recommend Spire Murrayfield in Edinburgh. As for the consultant - if you're able to - I'm aware he gets booked up quite fast - I cannot recommend Dr Simon Nicholson enough.

Wishing you all the luck in finding something suitable.
